Three lifelong friends. One chaotic quest. That’s the premise for Lisa McGee’s How To Get To Heaven From Belfast and given McGee’s track record, we have no doubt that the Derry Girls creator and her creative team are about to strike telly gold again.

Described by McGee as “a murder mystery – but funny” in an interview with the BBC, the eight-parter centres around Saoirse (Roísín Gallagher, The Dry), Robyn (Sinéad Keenan, Unforgotten) and Dara (Caoilfhionn Dunne, A Thousand Blows), who have been best friends since their school days.

They’re now in their late thirties and still as close as ever, but their lives are interrupted when they receive an email about the death of the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang. And after a series of eerie events at the wake leads them to believe that foul play is afoot, they begin an epic (and hilarious) odyssey across Ireland to try and piece together what really happened, as well as the truth about their past. What could possibly go wrong?

Roísín Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan and Caoilfhionn Dunne star in Lisa McGee’s new comedy.

Joining Gallagher, Keenan and Dunne for the wild ride is a stacked supporting cast of predominantly Irish talent including Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Ted), Emmett J Scanlan (MobLand), Tom Basden (Plebs), Josh Finan (Waiting For The Out), Michelle Fairley (Gangs Of London), Bronagh Gallagher (Brassic), Darragh Hand (Heartstopper) and Natasha O’Keeffe (Peaky Blinders). Plus, look out for Derry Girls stars Art Campion (who played Father Peter in the earlier show) and, in a cameo appearance, Saoirse-Monica Jackson.

Don’t miss How To Get To Heaven From Belfast from Thursday 12 February in Apps > Netflix a show that’s a little bit of everything, from mystery to comedy to thriller to a celebration of female friendship. And as luck would have it, its release coincides with Galentine’s Day, a term coined by Parks And Recreation’s Leslie Knope, who always gathers the gals together the day before Valentine’s Day to kick it breakfast style.

It’s ladies celebratin’ ladies”, as Leslie puts it, and that’s what we’re doing with this selection of our favourite screen sisterhoods. Grab your girls on 13 February and get ready to tune into 13 of the most hilarious, heartwarming and empowering friendships on TV.

Patsy & Edina

Jennifer Saunders and Joanne Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous.

Where to find them: Stream series 1-5 of Absolutely Fabulous and the specials in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Why we love them: While Pats and Eddie might occasionally enable each other’s bad behaviour, these sweetie darlings are the OG blueprint for the term “ride or die” and have stuck together through all sorts of tight spots.

Queen Charlotte & Lady Danbury

Adjoa Andoh and Golda Rosheuvel in Bridgerton.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-4 of Bridgerton in Apps > Netflix

Why we love them: Nothing says BFF quite like a lady-in-waiting, and Lady Danbury has been Queen Charlotte’s right-hand woman in the ton for decades. (We’re sure their season 4 quibbles will be resolved!) Find out more about the origins of their friendship in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (also on Netflix).

Nessa & Stacey

Ruth Jones and Joanna Page in Gavin & Stacey.

Where to find them: Stream series 1-3 of Gavin & Stacey and the specials in Apps > BBC iPlayer

Why we love them: They say that opposites attract and this unlikely friendship is one of our all-time favourites. After all, Nessa travelled all the way to London and paid £6 for a pizza slice just to make sure that Stacey’s date wasn’t a serial killer. Tidy.

Meredith & Cristina

Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh in Grey’s Anatomy.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-22 of Grey’s Anatomy in Apps > Disney+

Why we love them: Whether they were saving lives or dancing it out, these “twisted sisters” shared an unshakeable bond. Who could ever forget Cristina’s parting words to Meredith, “He’s very dreamy, but he’s not the sun. You are.” Goosebumps, every time.

The Derry Girls

Dylan Llewellyn, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan and Saoirse-Monica Jackson in Derry Girls.

Where to find them: Stream series 1-3 of Derry Girls in Apps > Channel 4 + Apps > Netflix

Why we love them: There’s no stronger bond than one shared between a group of schoolgirls (and James, of course). Despite navigating an unsteady political landscape and the growing pains of adolescent life, the Derry girls were a joyful celebration of friendship in its purest form and almost made us yearn for our carefree school days.

Blanca & Angel

Ryan Jamaal Swain, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and Indya Moore in POSE.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-3 of POSE in Apps > Disney+

Why we love them: Blanca and Angel redefined what a sisterhood looked like against a backdrop of ballroom rivalries, deep-rooted struggles in the trans-community and an exclusionary world. Together they nurtured each other’s dreams as well as those in their community, while finding the family they’d always longed for in one another.

Abbi + Ilana

Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson in Broad City.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-5 of Broad City in Apps > Paramount+

Why we love them: Whether FaceTiming from the toilet or supporting each other through the trials of womanhood in truly unhinged fashion, Abbi and Ilana were chosen sisters and we’d celebrate a friendiversary with them any time.

Taystee & Poussey

Danielle Brooks and Samira Wiley in Orange Is The New Black.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-7 of Orange Is The New Black in Apps > Netflix

Why we love them: In Litchfield Penitentiary, a world where loyalty was often the difference between survival and death, the deep bond between Taystee and Poussey was genuinely heartwarming. We ugly-cried when their sisterhood was cut short but take some comfort in knowing the actors are close friends IRL.

Leslie & Ann

Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones in Parks And Recreation.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-7 of Parks And Recreation in Apps > U

Why we love them: Not all love stories begin with romance. Some are powered by the belief that your BFF is the best thing since sliced waffles. Leslie and Ann’s friendship was the heart of Parks & Rec, and we’ve been chasing a love like theirs ever since. And of course, we couldn’t leave out the creator of Galentines Day.

Grace & Frankie

Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda in Grace And Frankie.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-7 of Grace And Frankie in Apps > Netflix

Why we love them: In a classic enemies-to-besties arc, jilted ex-wives Grace and Frankie forged a hard-won friendship in the most trying of circumstances, ultimately showing that sometimes you find your soulmates later in life. Aw!

Queenie & Kyazike

Dionne Brown and Bellah in Queenie.

Where to find them: Stream series 1 of Queenie in Apps > Channel 4

Why we love them: You can count yourself lucky if your childhood friendships only deepen with time. Queenie was one of those lucky few, always able to rely on her day-one Kyazike to get her out of the occasional boy-related mess. Honestly, friendship goals.

Jen & Judy

Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate in Dead To Me.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-3 of Dead To Me in Apps > Netflix

Why we love them: We can’t think of many friendships that are born from a hit-and-run accident where the perpetrator befriends the victim’s widow out of guilt… But it gives “friend who’d help you bury a body” a whole new meaning.

Samantha Jones & everyone else

Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex And The City.

Where to find them: Stream seasons 1-6 of Sex And The City in Sky Comedy on demand

Why we love them: While this quartet regularly tops TV’s friendship polls, it’s Samantha that we’d be calling in a crisis (or for a cosmopolitan). Whether she was enlightening her friends on the birds and the bees or simply giving them a power suit shoulder to cry on, we reckon Miss Jones is the best friend in all of New York City.
