The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 on Sky Max

How would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Hunker down and stay hidden? Flee into the wilderness? For The Walking Dead's Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), neither of those is an option – you can guarantee that you'll find them right in the middle of all the flesh-chomping action.

Which is exactly where we left these fan-beloved heroes at the end of second season. After a heart-racing course of events in which Carol left the US to track down her right-hand man in France (and had plenty of terrifying run-ins with both humans and the undead), the two finally reunited. Their next challenge? To find their way back home.

Now, the arrival of season 3 brings new trials for the pair as their journey leads them through lands that have fallen victim to the devastating effects of the Walker apocalypse. Check out the trailer below.

Don’t miss the third season, which airs at 9pm on Friday 24 October on Sky Showcase HD (CH 109) and Sky Max HD (CH 111). In the meantime, we answer all your burning questions about the upcoming season.

What is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon about?

Set shortly after the finale of the award-winning post-apocalyptic horror series The Walking Dead, the spin-off follows Daryl’s arduous odyssey across France after he’s abducted from the United States. There was no sunning it up on the French Riviera for our weary warrior, though, as this is the origin country of the Wildfire virus that creates Walkers (no one uses the word “zombies” in this world) and their aggressive, acid-spitting counterparts, Burners. Eek.

What happened in the first two seasons?

In season 1, Daryl met and became the protector of Laurent, a young boy believed to be humanity’s saviour. He agreed to deliver him to the Nest – HQ of the survivor group Union of Hope – in exchange for safe passage back home. Of course, in this universe danger, betrayal and unscrupulous enemies are never too far away, and by the end of their pilgrimage Daryl had elected to stay in France to protect Laurent and fellow comrade Isabelle.

By season 2, Daryl was caught up in conflict both inside and outside of the Nest, as he trained Laurent to fight Walkers much to the disapproval of those around him. Meanwhile, in the US, Carol was on a one-woman mission to find Daryl. A series of clues led her to France along with another survivor, Ash (Manish Dayal, The Resident). Cue an emotional reunion later (that takes place in the middle of an epic, zombie-slaying battle, obv) before they left on the next leg of their perilous quest. Destination: England.

What can we expect from the third season?

Stephen Merchant and Norman Reedus on set of the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

The third season reunites fans with Daryl and Carol in London after a dramatic ordeal in the Chunnel (remember those bioluminescent Walkers and that hallucinogenic bat guano?). Upon finding that the capital has been overrun by a horde of Walkers, they meet Julian Chamberlain (Stephen Merchant, Logan) who believes he’s the last survivor in England. Together the trio sail for the US… until their boat capsizes in a storm and they wash up on the shores of the Costa da Morte in Spain. Doh!

Injured and without supplies, our heroes are forced to navigate another strange world where dangerous new foes lurk, as well as a mysterious community who have their own means of survival. No spoilers from us though – you’ll have to tune into all seven episodes to find out exactly who and what Daryl and Carol are up against.

The new series also introduces a roster of new talent of series regulars including Eduardo Noriega (The Last Stand), Óscar Jaenada (Disney’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth) and Alexandra Masangkay (Stags). Additional cast members include Greta Fernández (known for the 2024 horror film Cuckoo), Irina Björklund (who starred with George Clooney in The American) and award-winning Spanish actor Vicente Romero.

Unbreakable bonds: Daryl and Carol’s iconic moments

With a fourth and final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon already confirmed, we can’t wait to find out what fate ultimately awaits these Walking Dead OGs. After all, we’ve been watching them – and rooting for them –since 2010. Whether you believe that they’re just BFFs or are a diehard Caryl shipper, they’ve given us some truly memorable moments over the years. Here are just some of our favourites (and where you can find them now in Sky Max on demand).

The Cherokee rose

Daryl and Carol riding his motorcyle in The Walking Dead.

Episode: The Walking Dead, season 2, episode 4

What happens? In one of their earliest on-screen moments, Daryl comforts Carol during the search for her daughter by telling her the story of the Cherokee rose, in which flowers bloomed from the tears of Native American mothers looking for their missing children. This poignant moment from the usually gruff Daryl marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship for the pair and sparked a thousand “Caryl” fan fictions.

“Sorry, Pookie”

Daryl and Carol share a moment of humour in The Walking Dead.

Episode: The Walking Dead, season 4, episode 1

What happens? While most of us would take securing our base amid a worldwide undead apocalypse very seriously, Carol and Daryl couldn’t help but joke around while strategising. This was the first time Carol referred to Daryl as “pookie”, which would eventually become a running joke between the pair for the rest of the show. Even though it was meant in jest, the adorable nickname was still enough to make our hearts flutter.

The first reunion

Daryl and Carol reunite in The Walking Dead.

Episode: The Walking Dead, season 5, episode 1

What happens? While Daryl escaping his captors at the Terminus and fighting off a herd of Walkers without his crossbow was epic stuff, it was his tearful reunion with Carol that got us right in the feels and made this one of our favourite episodes. After all, it was one of the few moments in the show where the hard-bitten warrior let his guard down and showed viewers just how much he cared for Carol. We’re not crying, you are!

Daryl calls Carol his best friend

Daryl calls Carol his best friend in The Walking Dead.

Episode: The Walking Dead, season 10, episode 1

What happens? Even this tough-as-nails Walker slayer has a soft side. After the two break away from the group to go hunting together, Daryl tells Carol she’s his best friend before gifting her a rugged, handmade friendship bracelet. While we always knew that these two shared a deep connection, this heartwarming exchange in an otherwise terrifying world would warm even the coldest heart.

“I love you”

Daryl and Carol share a tender moment before parting ways in The Walking Dead.

Episode: The Walking Dead, season 11, episode 24

What happens? In the last ever episode of The Walking Dead’s original series, the writers gave the fandom exactly what they wanted with Daryl and Carol exchanging those three words before heading off for pastures new. Whether it was platonic or a romantic confession is up to you, but it marked a significant milestone in their relationship as McBride later reflected in Entertainment Weekly, “Filming that scene by the lake with Norman was the most difficult scene on this show that I’ve ever had to get myself through.”

The second reunion in France

Daryl and Carol escape to England through the English tunnel.

Episode: The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, season 2, episode 4

What happens? Against all odds, Carol tracked down Daryl to the Nest in France, where he was being held captive. The two shared a silent yet powerful embrace before fleeing together. While this long-awaited reunion marks an emotional moment on the show, what ensues over the following episodes shows the strength of the unbreakable bond they share, as they refuse to leave each other behind and fight off the tunnel’s psychoactive effects and mutated, bioluminescent zombies together.
