School is back in session. Super-powered students are flocking back to the hallowed halls of Godolkin University in preparation to become the next generation of professional superheroes. And there are new threats to face and new mysteries to uncover…

Fans of Gen V – the spin-off series from the Emmy-winning world of The Boys – will find it hard to forget when blood-bending supe Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) first burst onto screens. After accidentally killing her parents during a violent tween outburst, Marie enrolled at the college (which is funded by devious superhero corporation Vought International) with the hope of learning to control her powers to become a member of the prestigious superhero team, The Seven.

Her plans were soon disrupted, though, and by the end of the first year her world had unravelled. Along with fellow students Emma Meyer (Lizze Broadway), Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo) and Jordan Li (Derek Luh and London Thor), Marie was imprisoned in a hidden facility.

The beginning of a new school year can only mean a fresh start for these sophomore supes though... right? Don’t miss the return of Gen V with three episodes available to watch now in Apps > Prime Video. Meanwhile, we’re here to answer all your burning Gen V questions, from recaps to new season storylines. Plus, read on to the end for our Gen V quiz to discover which of the budding supes you are.

Let’s catch up. What happened in season 1?

When young supe Marie arrived at the prestigious Godolkin University for budding superheroes, she quickly realised that everything was not as it seemed. After witnessing the suicide of top student Golden Boy (Patrick Schwarzenegger), she discovered a secret on-campus laboratory known as “The Woods” where Golden Boy’s brother Sam Riordan (Asa Germann) and other supes were being subjected to experimental horrors.

After rescuing Sam, student supes Marie, Emma and Jordan were betrayed by fellow student Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) under the influence of the corrupt Dean Indira Shetty (Shelley Conn). To make matters worse, Shetty was behind the development of a supe-killing virus, and its discovery triggered a violent uprising.

It got worse, as not only were Marie and her friends imprisoned for resisting, but Cate and Sam were rewarded by Homelander (Antony Starr) for their part in the uprising.

So, what sort of superpowers are we talking about?

Asa Germann as Sam Riordan in Gen V.

While most of us think of flight, invisibility and super-speed when it comes to superpowers, Gen V has taken a much darker approach when it comes to the supes’ abilities. Marie possesses the power of haemokinesis, aka full control over her own and others’ blood. She uses her blood-bending powers to defend, heal and attack others (who could forget the moment she exploded Cate’s arm in the season 1 finale?).

Elsewhere, Emma has the ability to change in size. Cate’s powers are based on mind-control via touch; Sam has super strength and invulnerability; and Jordan has the unique ability of changing between male and female forms, through which different powers manifest— the man is dense and indestructible, while the woman is agile and can launch energy blasts. Impressive…

Outside of our core supes, other powers in the show include magnetism, pyrokinesis, clairvoyance, mind-wiping abilities and, er, even a prehensile tail which can be used to block and throw objects. Meaning you can expect some mind-blowing special effects and edge-of-your-seat action sequences throughout.

Gen V season 2 cast

Hamish Linklater as Cipher in Gen V season 2.

Season 2 stars familiar faces Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann and Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity. Joining the cast is Hamish Linklater (Manhunt) as the dangerously charismatic new Dean of Godolkin, Cipher. Wicked star Ethan Slater also portrays the college’s founding member Thomas Godolkin. In a flashback, his character reveals that the original purpose of the school was to pursue the mysterious Project Odessa. Intriguing…

What else can we expect from the new season?

Gen V season 2 takes place after the events of The Boys season 4, and will lead into the parent show’s fifth and final season. As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander's iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever.

Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between humans and supes, both on and off campus.

The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.

Will there be more crossover with The Boys?

We saw some of The Boys’ fan-favourite characters make an appearance at God U in season 1, including Homelander’s dramatic entrance in the Gen V finale and a credits scene of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) investigating The Woods laboratory. And fans can expect even more crossovers in the new season.

Annie January (Erin Moriarty) will play a significant role as she recruits Marie to help stop Project Odessa, a dangerous programme linked to Godolkin University’s origins. As of now, we know that joining Annie in Gen V are The Deep (Chace Crawford), Firecracker (Valorie Curry) and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) – and hopefully more.
