Four Good Days
Saturday 6 June, 9.30pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
Mila Kunis took a bold step away from comedies like Bad Moms and The Spy Who Dumped Me to take the lead role in this uncompromising drama based on real-life events. Kunis is Molly, who’s on her way to visit her mother Deb (Glenn Close, Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man) and beg for Deb’s help to get into, and through, drug rehab. Slowly, we discover the cracks Molly fell through, the sacrifices she made and the institutional challenges she faced over repeated attempts to get clean. Stylish, eye-opening and sobering in every sense.
Greta
Sunday 7 June, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
If only more people were like Frances (Chloë Grace Moritz, Let Me In), who kindly returns a handbag left on a New York subway – and then strikes up a rapport with its owner, an eccentric piano teacher named Greta (Isabelle Huppert, Mrs Harris Goes To Paris). But when a disturbing discovery prompts Frances to step back from their friendship, Greta reveals a darker side to her personality. Neither Frances nor anyone close to her is safe in this gripping psychological thriller from director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game).
The Mummy
Saturday 13 June, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
Archaeological discoveries in London and Iraq have got the historians excited but what they should be is scared, because – oops! – the vengeful spirit of a wronged Egyptian princess has been released. It’s down to US Army sergeant Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) to stop her, and though he’s briefly stymied by dying in a plane crash, he won’t let that deter him from his world-saving mission. The Mummy is a huge-scale, all-action epic with the mind-boggling effects you’d expect from a supernatural blockbuster and the stellar stunts you’d expect from Cruise. Also starring Russell Crowe.
Halloween
)
Sunday 14 June, 9.30pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
Blumhouse, the modern horror studio par excellence (Get Out, Paranormal Activity, Insidious), hit the jackpot when it jumped on board this classic movie series and produced a $260 million hit. Despite the back-to-basics title, Halloween not a reboot but a continuation, featuring the 1978 original’s hero Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis) as a grandmother living in an isolated cabin; she believes it’s just a matter of time until her murderous nemesis Michael Myers escapes his secure facility and wreaks havoc on the community again. It’s not a spoiler to say she guessed right. Inventive, scary and properly gruesome, it revitalised the franchise and spawned two more hit sequels.
Boy Erased
Saturday 20 June, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
A phenomenal cast leads this heartbreaking drama, including Oscar winners Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Nicole Kidman (The Hours) and Oscar nominees Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea) and Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), who also directs. Jared Eamons (Hedges) is a young man packed off to gay conversion therapy by his father (Crowe), a Baptist preacher. Under the thumb of relentlessly harsh instructor Sykes (Edgerton), Jared comes to realise that there’s no realistic end to the programme for him – will his more sympathetic mother (Kidman) be his saviour? Based on the acclaimed memoir by Garrard Conley, it’s a powerful and emotional story.
Zero Dark Thirty
Sunday 21 June, 9.30pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
Kathryn Bigelow, Oscar-winning director of The Hurt Locker, returned to the theatre of modern warfare for this tense action thriller detailing the build-up to the operation that took out al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two) is Maya, the CIA analyst determined to use every route possible to track down her target as she deals with double and triple agents, attacks from shadowy antagonists and resistance from within the intelligence establishment. The final act, in which SEAL Team Six carry out the raid on Osama’s compound, is the definition of nail-biting, and the tension is heightened thanks to stunning ultra HD images.
Happy Death Day
Saturday 27 June, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
What if Groundhog Day but… for murder?! Tree (Jessica Rothe) is having a very weird birthday: not only because she keeps getting killed, but also because as soon as she does, she wakes up and experiences the same morning routine all over again, always ending in a brutal demise. After a few repetitions, she hits on the idea that she must solve her own murder to break the cycle – and suspect number one is a serial killer being treated at the local hospital. Comic horror doesn’t always work, but Happy Death Day gets maximum fun from its concept and throws in some seriously creative violence along the way, as well as some gonzo twists.
Happy Death Day 2U
)
Sunday 28 June, 9pm, Virgin TV Ultra HD (CH 175/999)
There’s a wacky irony in making a sequel to a time loop movie featuring the same main character. Is it actually the viewer who’s stuck in it? But Happy Death Day 2U gets away with it by playing around with the whole idea, sneaking in an explanation for the temporal event – an experimental quantum reactor, of course! – and adding enough zany plot contortions to keep you on the edge of your seat. New timelines! Shocking infidelity! Different killers! Resurrected family members! Once again, it’s all riotously entertaining, held together by a spirited central performance from scream queen Jessica Rothe.
