Soap Histories: Home And Away

Looks like it's gonna be a hot one again

Find out the latest gossip in our comprehensive soap news section.

Brief History

Whose idea? The Australian Seven Network’s head of drama Alan Bateman came up with the idea in 1986 when charged with the idea of creating a new show to rival Ten Network’s Neighbours. The inspiration for the very first pilot came after he visited Kangaroo Point, a small town in New South Wales. Alan stopped there to buy ice cream for his family.

Where's it set? In the beautiful, idyllic coastal town of Summer Bay. There’s a beach, it’s hot, there’s a surf club and a beachside diner where you can get a 'choccy milkshake' - could it be any more Australian?!

"Hold me in your arms! Don't let me go! I want to stay forever!"

The very start: 'Hold me in your arms! Don’t let me go! I want to stay forever. Closer each dayyyyyy... Home and Away!' Those glorious opening credits appeared for the very first time on 17th January 1988 introducing us to main characters Tom and Pippa. They ran their caravan park and fostered several children.

Controversy! Life in the sun by the beach is not without its difficulties, although Summer Bay seemed mainly concerned with young love until more gritty issues started to creep in. The Summer Bay Stalker storyline of 2005 was very successful and during 2006, Home and Away saw drug use, violence and gripping family love triangles.
