Where was After Life filmed?

Ricky Gervais plays Tony Johnson, a cynical journalist who works for a local paper. His wife, Lisa, has recently died of breast cancer and Tony is struggling to cope with his bereavement.

Tony feels the universe has deprived him of his happy life and wants revenge. He rejects suicide. Instead, he decides to be inconsiderate and wholly selfish. Friends and family try to rescue him from his new heartless persona and retrieve the nice guy they loved.

The action of After Life takes place in the fictional small town of Tambury. A variety of locations were put together to represent it. The main shooting centres are Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire and Hampstead, London NW3.

After Life filming locations: High Street, Hemel Hempstead

All the main buildings that appear around the Old Town Hall square and high street were filmed here, many of them real businesses. These include the struggling Tambury Gazette where Tony works, which is shot in the office of Community Action Dacorum at 48 High Street.

Shopping trips and After Life street encounters also take place in the High Street, with Jordans Antique Centre featuring in the opening episode. Tony eats in The Coffee Cup cafe with his nephew George and we also see the Tea Tree tea room. The co-workers night out at the Laughing Gas Comedy Club was shot in The White Hart pub.

After Life filming locations: Beaconsfield Old Town

The churchyard bench scenes and the graveyard where Tony walks his dog were filmed at St Mary and All Saints church, near Windsor End in Beaconsfield Old Town. Julian's funeral and cremation scenes were also filmed here and at the Fitzwilliams Centre opposite the church.

The Old Town Registration Office features in After Life as the Autumnal Leaves Care Home, across the street from the churchyard. This is where Tony goes to visit his father and meets the care nurse who's looking after him. In the second series, there is a theatre group that meets regularly for rehearsals. Exteriors for their meeting place were shot at Beaconsfield's Old Schoolhouse.

After Life filming locations: Hampstead, London NW3

Various scenes in After Life were filmed in Hampstead. Tony's house is in an old-fashioned hamlet on the west of Hampstead Heath, called the Vale of Health. He walks his dog on Hampstead Heath with scenery from strategic viewpoints on Parliament Hill. He also goes dog-walking at The Hill Garden and Pergola. This Georgian parkland is west of Hampstead, on the edge of Golders Hill Park.

Tony visits the garage where his friend Julian lives, or at least sleeps, in Flask Walk. The William IV pub, on Hampstead High Street, is the location for a lunchtime pub scene where Tony encounters a noisy crisp eater. Just off Hampstead High Street in Perrins Court is the Villa Bianca Italian restaurant, where the date night was filmed.

After Life filming locations: Camber Sands

In one episode of After Life, Tony is seen walking his dog along the beach. Though it only appears to take him a few minutes to get there along a path, the beach is in fact many miles away at Camber Sands, in East Sussex.

After Life filming locations: Mill End Community Centre

The location exteriors for St Jude's Junior School, where nephew George attends, were filmed in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, at the Mill End Community Centre.
