Where was Sherlock filmed?

The filming locations for Sherlock are no longer a mystery

A modern take on the popular Victorian novels, Sherlock is packed with edge-of-your-seat drama, unique cases, and a dash of British eccentricity.

While Sherlock is set in and around London, you won’t have spotted any film crews on Baker Street. Few scenes were filmed in the capital, with most of the production taking place in Cardiff, studios, and the Welsh countryside.

Wondering where Sherlock was filmed? We’ve cracked the case and tracked down some of its most iconic filming locations.

Sherlock filming locations: St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Smithfield, London

The scene where Sherlock jumps off the roof, seemingly to his death, was filmed at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. This hospital is the oldest in England, having been on the same site since 1123 and surviving the Blitz and Great Fire of London. It’s an imposing building, which you can enter via the famous Henry VIII gates, named for the statue of the former king. There’s even a small museum, with limited opening hours, where you can learn about the hospital's history and some of the gruesome details of old-fashioned treatments.

Sherlock filming locations: Cardiff National Museum, Cardiff, Wales

While the museum that Yao works in may look like a classic London attraction, it’s actually the Cardiff National Museum transformed into the fictional National Antiquities Museum. You might recognise the grand staircase from the show. A lot of the exhibits were props added for effect but, in reality, you can see a wide variety of exhibits from dinosaur bones to natural history displays and impressive art galleries.

Sherlock filming locations: The Packet, Bute Street, Cardiff Bay, Wales

The pub where Inspector Lestrade drinks, with its beautiful stained-glass windows, can be found in Cardiff Bay. The Packet is a large pub with a hotel upstairs, so dedicated fans can even stay overnight at a Sherlock location. It’s on Bute Street, which was also used for quite a few exteriors as it resembles a busy London street.
