You’ve found your next home, exchanged the contracts and paid your deposit – now all that’s left to do is move in. We know there’s a lot to think about too. There are boxes to pack, utility providers to contact and a good old de-clutter to be had. Rather than adding another thing to your list, we’re here to help – not just with moving your broadband, but with the move itself.
Our six-week checklist is designed to help you make sure everything is in order. Not yet told us? Book your home move with Virgin Media today.

✓ Let us know you’re moving
First things first, let us know you’re moving home. Earlier is better so we can get started on arranging your installation. We’ll then send you an email with everything you need to know about your big day. This will include the disconnection date of your old address, the reconnection date at your new address and your package details. If you can’t find it, or if you’d like to change your installation time, chat to us online.
✓ Tell your new landlord
If you’re moving to a rented home, you’ll need to tell us so we can check your landlord is happy to have Virgin Media services at the property. If the property is already connected to our network, you’re good to go. But, if we need to send our team around to install the cable, we’ll need your landlord’s permission. It’s a simple process and we’ll do all the legwork for you.
✓ Clear out your clutter
Now’s the time to get rid of all that electrical equipment left gathering dust on shelves and in drawers – whether that’s old PCs, mobiles or game consoles. Check out O2 Recycle to send away your unwanted tech for free. Once you’re free of old clutter, you might want to treat your new home to some new kit – moving is a great excuse!

✓ Start packing non-essentials
This is a great time to start packing the things you could do without for a few weeks. Maybe leave the toaster and kettle where there are, but things like blenders, out-of-season clothes and holiday decorations can all start to be packed up.
✓ Tell your family and friends your new address
Contact those closest to you to let them know you’re moving. This also goes for your work, dentist and local council. It’s important they know they can no longer reach you at your old address.
Top tip: Don't forget to delete your old address from online retailers (such as Amazon). There's nothing worse than realising your package has been delivered to an old address.
✓ Change the address on your TV licence
So you can keep watching your favourite shows on Virgin TV as soon as you move in.
✓ Redirect your mail
Make sure your post moves with you. You don’t want to miss out on any important documents, as well as all that personal post like birthday and Christmas cards.
1 week to go
✓ Transfer your utilities to your new place
Contact your utility provider to let them know when you’re moving out and if they’re coming with you. That includes your gas, electricity, water, phone and broadband providers (that’s us). They’ll want to know when you're moving out, your new address and your closing meter readings.
✓ Tell everyone who looks after your money
Settle all bills and council tax owed on your current property and then let your bank know you're moving, plus anyone else who looks after your money. This will ensure details of your accounts, credit cards, savings and investments don’t get sent to the wrong address.
✓ Update your address book
Make sure your call log is up to date with everyone’s phone numbers so you can easily catch up when you’re settled in your new place.
✓ Make a note of where your gadget wires go
Our engineer will get your services up and running, but if you’ve got loads of kit connected to your TV, such as games consoles or home cinema system, it’s worth making a note of where the wires go.
Top tip: Pop any loose wires or screws into clear resealable bags, then tape them to the gadget or furniture they belong to. This will make it easier to reassemble everything in your new home.
The night before
✓ Pack your essentials
Make a box of stuff that you can easily grab when it comes to moving day – stuff that you’ll need for your first night. We’re not just talking clothes and toiletries. We're also talking about your bedding and other creature comforts – like tea and milk, along with mugs and the kettle.
✓ Carefully pack your TV and Virgin Media kit
To make life nice and easy, we ask you to take all you Virgin Media kit with you – including the Hub. This way you can get your devices connected and your new home up and running in no time.
✓ Pack some tools
You’ll probably need a screwdriver, light bulbs, tape or scissors at some point.
And finally...
Once you’ve had a final clean and check over, leave a Post-it note with some tips for the people moving in. Recommend us to them and you could both pocket up to £50 cash with our refer a friend scheme.
