Jurassic World Rebirth

Buy or rent now. Cert 12

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) teams up with original Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp for this gripping new chapter in the dino saga. Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) stars as a leader of an elite team of operatives sent to the most dangerous place on Earth: a long-abandoned island research facility from the original park, tasked with retrieving priceless genetic material from dinosaurs whose DNA could save millions of lives. The team also including Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend soon uncovers a sinister secret buried beneath the surface. With breathtaking spectacle, sharp tension and a sense of adventure worthy of the franchise’s roots, Rebirth is a bold, exhilarating new era for Jurassic fans.

One Battle After Another

Premium release. Buy or rent now. Cert 15

One Battle After Another was lavished with five-star reviews by critics who loved its bold mix of drama, comedy, drama and sheer unrestrained entertainment. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) plays Bob, an idealistic but ineffective revolutionary whose partner Perfidia (Teyana Taylor, Straw) is far more successful – but her manipulation of a military officer (Sean Penn, Milk) leads to a long-lasting grudge that dogs the pair for years. Beautifully shot by acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood), it fires off satirical points at numerous targets, but its cleverness never gets in the way of large-scale cinematic thrills. A rare treat.

Sinners

Michael B Jordan in Sinners, available on Virgin Media Store now.

Available to buy now. Cert 15

The director-star team of Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan (Creed, Black Panther) joined forces again in one of the biggest hits of 2025. Set in the 1930s, Jordan plays twin brothers who return to their hometown to open a dance club, never suspecting it’s going to be overrun by vampires. As a supernatural musical period horror with a predominantly Black cast, it’s a true original. Also starring Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo and Hailee Steinfeld.

Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Buy or rent now. Cert 12

Marvel’s First Family steps into the MCU with this gorgeous movie set in a gorgeously realised 1960s retro-futuristic world. Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal, Gladiator II), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby, The Crown), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn, Stranger Things) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, The Bear) have been in the hero business for four successful years when they encounter a threat of cosmic proportions – the planet-guzzler Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his herald Shalla-Bal, aka the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). But to save their universe, will they need to make the ultimate sacrifice? Blending dazzling action, sharp humour and heartfelt drama, First Steps is a triumph.

Superman

Buy or rent now. Cert 12

Writer/director James Gunn kicks off a brand-new DC Universe with his take on the iconic hero. David Corenswet (Twisters) dons the cape to play an alien caught between his Kryptonian heritage and his life as a Kansas farm boy, facing Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult, The Great) and navigating his growing bond with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). This Superman is equal parts heartfelt, witty and spectacular – and the kind of fresh start only Gunn (Guardians Of The Galaxy, Peacemaker) could deliver. A soaring reinvention that puts hope, humour and humanity at the heart of the DCU, and the best cinematic pooch since the dog in The Artist.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

Buy now or rent from Monday 15 December. Cert PG

The Crawleys are back for more aristocratic shenanigans in and around the titular stately home. Once again, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery, Flight Risk) is causing a scandal with her romantic status and the family are down on their luck financially – could handsome American investor Gus (Alessandro Nivola, The Brutalist) solve both problems? Meanwhile, below stairs, wedding preparations are well under way. Even without the late Maggie Smith’s acid-tongued Dowager Countess, this is delightful, escapist fun – and despite the title, we wouldn’t be surprised to see more of these movies.

Bugonia

Emma Stone in Bugonia, available to buy or rent on Virgin Media Store.

Premium release. Available to buy or rent now on Virgin Media Store. Cert 15

Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Favorite) serves up another beautifully strange, slyly funny tale that only he could deliver. Lanthimos’ frequent collaborator Emma Stone is magnetic as Michelle Fuller, a razor-sharp pharmaceutical CEO kidnapped by a pair of conspiracy theory-obsessed men (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis), who quickly find themselves in way over their heads. With its immaculate visuals, off-kilter humour and moments of genuine unease, Bugonia is a bold, surprising and hugely entertaining trip into Lanthimos-land.

Weapons

Buy or rent now. Cert 15

We might have moved from the scary season to the season of gift giving… but that doesn’t mean one of those presents can’t be a good scare. They don’t come much scarier than this chilling, genre-bending horror from acclaimed director Zach Cregger (Barbarian). When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanishes on the same night at the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. Creggar is relatively new to the game, but he might be horror’s new master – and the critics agree (this movie currently holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes). Josh Brolin and Julia Garner star.

Freakier Friday

Buy or rent now. Cert PG

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite after 22 years for a sequel to the much-loved body swap movie Freaky Friday, and the title doesn’t lie: things are freakier this time around, with a double body swap. After some domestic squabbles and an unsettling palm-reading episode, generation-gap switcheroos occur involving teenagers Harper (Julia Butters) and Lily (Sophia Hammons), who immediately set about using their new adult status for their own purposes. Anna (Lohan) and Tess (Curtis) are veterans at this, of course – but that doesn’t mean they’ll prevent any zany goings-on in this uproarious comedy.

The Roses

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in The Roses, available on Virgin Media Store now.

Available to buy now or rent from Tuesday 16 December on Virgin Media Store. Cert 15

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch deliver two of their finest performances in this elegant, piercing drama about a marriage at breaking point. The Roses seem to have the perfect life until a single revelation sends their carefully curated world spinning. As simmering tensions rise to the surface, writer Tony McNamara and director Jay Roach blend sharp wit with emotional precision, creating a film that’s as darkly funny as it is heartbreaking. Powered by two outstanding leads and beautifully observed storytelling, The Roses is grown-up, gripping cinema at its best.
