And so we draw closer to the all-important “business end” of the season. Which season? All of them of course!
This week on BT Sport
Think of this as the business end before the business end – the period where those threatening to challenge make their intentions clear ahead of one final push, and where those who are unable to sustain a charge start to fall by the wayside.
Case in point: Arsenal and Chelsea. The Premier League pair meet in a crunch top-four tussle, while Kilmarnock and Rangers battle it out in a bid to stay within reach of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
In Germany, Bayern Munich visit an unhappy stomping ground over at Hoffenheim, while rivals Perth and Hobart go head to head as Australia’s Big Bash League crosses its half-way point.
Read on for our round-up of all the big action on BT Sport…
Perth Scorchers v Hobart Hurricanes
Friday 18 January, 10.15am, BT Sport 2 HD (CH 528)
The most aptly named team in the Big Bash League (it truly is scorching hot in Western Australia at this time of year) host last year’s runners-up as crafty campaigner Michael Klinger, who’s scored the most runs in the competition, faces new kid on the all-rounder block Jofra Archer. Scorchers remain the favourites to reach a record sixth final, so expect to see them go particularly big in this particular bash.
Hoffenheim v Bayern Munich
Friday 18 January 7.15pm, BT Sport 1 HD (CH 527)
Something big is going down in the Bundesliga. For the first time in ages, Bayern Munich are not predicted to win the league. With Lucien Favre’s Borussia Dortmund bravehearts leading the German giants by a healthy margin, Bayern simply cannot afford to stop winning if they’re to have any hope of achieving a seventh successive title. With Bayern travelling to the splendidly named Rhine-Neckar-Arena, where they’ve failed to score in two straight defeats, this will be one tasty game.
Arsenal v Chelsea
Saturday 19 January, 5pm, BT Sport 1 HD (CH 527)
Back in August, Chelsea inflicted a second successive defeat upon Arsenal as the Gunners started life slowly under Unai Emery. Or so it seemed. That loss sparked an unbeaten run to lift them back into top-four contention alongside their old London rivals. North hosts West in a classic encounter that rarely fails to disappoint. Check out our preview of this mammoth clash here.
Kilmarnock v Rangers
Wednesday 23 January, 7.15pm, BT Sport 1 HD (CH 527)
Fair play to Steven Gerrard. In his first managerial role, the Rangers boss is on course to achieve the club’s highest top-flight points tally since that ill-fated 2011-12 campaign. The bigger picture is ousting rivals Celtic from the summit, mirroring the sentiments of a Kilmarnock outfit exceeding all expectations in a refreshingly close title race. It’s all to play for at Rugby Park.
