Live sport on TV this week

England are in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup and there’s plenty of other sport to enjoy this week too, including cricket, golf, basketball and the return of European club rugby union

By Chris Miller, Writer

The number of games may have dropped but the excitement and tension have very much increased as the FIFA World Cup gets down to the final rounds, with every game live this week (Monday 5 to Sunday 11 December) on your Virgin TV channels. While Wales sadly had to say goodbye to Qatar after the group stage, England are through to the quarter-finals to face France on Saturday, and it only gets tougher after that. All four quarter-finals are live on BBC One or ITV1 on Friday and Saturday. Check out our complete guide – and take our fun group stage quiz!

If the World Cup isn’t enough football for you, action continues elsewhere with matches from – deep breath – the EFL, WSL, FA Cup, National League, Northern Irish Premiership, Scottish SPFL Trust Trophy, Scottish Women’s League Cup and the A-Leagues all live this week. Phew!

Rugby union’s biggest club competition is back as the European Champions Cup 2022/23 campaign starts. La Rochelle start the defence of their title at home to Northampton, with nine live games in total on BT Sport at the weekend (the Anglo-Scottish clash between Saracens and Edinburgh is also on ITV1). The Challenge Cup returns too, and you can see the Blues take on Brive on S4C.

There’s loads of basketball, including the London Lions’ continuing European adventures on BT Sport, American football, UFC, badminton, golf and a surprising amount of cricket considering it’s December, including the second match in England’s already remarkable men’s Test series in Pakistan and women’s T20 action from England’s tour of the West Indies. You’re never short of live sport to keep you entertained on Virgin TV.
