Crunch time in the UEFA Champions League!

Crunch time in the UEFA Champions League!

As the group stage reaches its thrilling climax on BT Sport, find out what’s at stake for the English clubs

The tension is about to be cranked up in European club football’s elite competition…

UEFA Champions League, continues Tuesday 11 December, BT Sport

To paraphrase Friends’ Chandler Bing: could this UEFA Champions League group stage be any more exciting? The competition has been thrillingly unpredictable so far, and the terrific group-stage action isn’t over yet because there’s still one round of fixtures left to play.

Whether it’s finishing top of the group, nabbing second place, sealing a UEFA Europa League spot or dropping out of the picture altogether, there are loads of permutations going into the final round of fixtures – all of which are live on BT Sport.

But if you find yourself getting a headache trying to assess all the possibilities, don’t worry. We’ve crunched the numbers, calculated the odds and figured out what’s on the line for all the English clubs on matchday 6. Game on!

Barcelona v Tottenham Hotspur

Tuesday 11 December, 7.15pm, BT Sport 3 HD (CH 529)

The good news for Spurs is that they can still reach the last 16 after beating Group B rivals Inter on matchday 5. The bad news? They’ll probably have to beat Barcelona at the Camp Nou to qualify. Gulp. Looking at things more closely, Tottenham must match Inter’s result with PSV Eindhoven on matchday 6 to progress – but with Inter expected to see off the Dutch champions on home turf, second-placed Spurs are faced with a huge task against group winners Barca. Finish third and it’s the UEFA Europa League for Mauricio Pochettino’s men… Get ready for a nerve-jangling night.

Liverpool v Napoli

Tuesday 11 December, 7pm, BT Sport 2 HD (CH 528)

Having suffered a damaging defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last time out, Jürgen Klopp’s Reds find themselves third in Group C heading into their last game against leaders Napoli. Liverpool, PSG and Napoli can all still qualify, but in simple terms, the English team must beat the Italians to get to the last 16. Although a victory by one goal isn’t enough. Unless it’s 1-0. We think. Anyway, Liverpool could finish first, second, third (which would mean the UEFA Europa League) or even bottom of the standings. Hold tight, because this could be one of the great European nights at Anfield.

Manchester City v Hoffenheim

Wednesday 12 December, 7pm, BT Sport 2 HD (CH 528)

The blue juggernaut marches on. Pep Guardiola’s City sealed their spot in the last 16 with a 2-2 draw against Lyon on matchday 5, thanks to goals from Aymeric Laporte and Sergio Agüero. Lyon, who also qualified, are just three points behind leaders City going into the final round of group fixtures, which adds a bit of spice. However, the Premier League champions have such a superior goal difference it looks pretty much impossible to shift them from the top of the table.

Valencia v Manchester United

Manchester United UEFA Champions League

Wednesday 12 December, 7.15pm, BT Sport 3 HD (CH 529)

After Marouane Fellaini’s last-gasp goal (and José Mourinho’s decimation of some water bottles) against Young Boys, United can safely say they’re through to the last 16. But will it be the Red Devils or Juventus who end up topping Group H? Juve – who face already-eliminated Young Boys on matchday 6 – just have to match United’s result against Valencia to finish first, but any kind of slip-up for the Italians will give Mourinho’s men an opportunity to win the group. If that happens, expect the Portuguese to be his usual humble self about the achievement…
