Virgin Media and the Get It Right From A Genuine Site campaign
Last updated: February 17, 2017
Get It Right is an educational initiative aimed at reducing online copyright infringement and is supported & part funded by the Government.
The Get It Right campaign includes an email Alert programme which the UKs major ISPs have committed to - Virgin Media, Sky, Talk Talk and BT.
Why have I received an email Alert?
You'll have received an alert if an owner of copyrighted content such as a movie, TV show or a song lets us know of an alleged copyright infringement (unauthorized sharing of a file) using your Virgin Media broadband account.
When we get this notice we'll send you a Copyright Alert.
Please note: If you’re using Outlook 2010 or earlier, you may find that the link in the Alert won’t work. Try opening this email with a more up to date email client, or using webmail (through your internet browser).
Why are you snooping on my online activity?
This does not involve any monitoring of internet traffic by ISPs. The identification of alleged infringement is done by content owners or their authorised representatives on peer-to-peer networks only. Content owners do this by using proven electronic scanning technologies which are searching publicly available information. They do not have access to private browsing information or general internet use.
What about data protection?
The Alert Programme is committed to respecting subscriber’s privacy rights. At no time will ISPs share personal information (name, address, etc.) with anyone else (including the content owners or other ISPs) except pursuant to a properly issued court order requested if the infringing behaviour continues. The entire programme is fully compliant with applicable laws and regulations including the Data Protection Act 1998 and with best practices as published by the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office).
