What is MiFi?

MiFi (short for “mobile WiFi”) is a small, portable router that uses mobile data to create a personal WiFi hotspot. Instead of relying on fixed broadband or public WiFi, MiFi uses a SIM card and mobile networks to connect your devices to the internet.

Once connected, it shares that mobile internet connection wirelessly, allowing multiple devices, such as phones, laptops and tablets, to get online at the same time. Think of it as pocket-sized version of your broadband router you can take almost anywhere. While MiFi isn’t designed to replace home broadband long term, it provides reliable internet on the move.

How does MiFi work?

MiFi works similarly to mobile hotspots, but as a dedicated device built specifically for sharing internet. It’s simple, smart, and designed for life on the move.

  • SIM-powered connection: A MiFi device contains a SIM card that connects to 4G or 5G mobile networks, just like a smartphone.

  • WiFi hotspot: Once connected, the device creates a local WiFi network that other devices can join securely.

  • Multiple devices: Most MiFi devices allow several devices to connect at once, making them great for families, teams, or anyone juggling multiple screens.

  • Battery powered: MiFi devices have built-in rechargeable batteries, so you can use them anywhere without needing a plug socket.

Because MiFi uses mobile data, speeds depend on network coverage and signal strength. In areas with strong 4G or 5G, you can enjoy smooth streaming, video calls, and fast downloads wherever you are.

What is MiFi useful for?

MiFi is all about flexibility, and that makes it useful in more situations than you might expect.

From airports and hotels to road trips and campsites, MiFi helps you stay connected across the UK and abroad. It’s ideal for using maps, managing bookings, streaming on the go, and sharing photos or videos without relying on slow or unsecured public WiFi.

When your broadband goes down, MiFi can act as a handy backup connection. It keeps essential devices online for work, messaging, and browsing until your main broadband service is restored.

MiFi is great for sharing. Multiple devices can connect at the same time, making it ideal for families on holiday, group trips, or small teams who need to stay connected while on the move.

Are MiFi and WiFi the same?

WiFi is the wireless technology that lets devices connect to the internet without cables. It’s built into everyday devices like home broadband routers, smartphones, laptops and tablets.

MiFi is a portable device that creates a WiFi network using mobile data. Instead of connecting through a fixed broadband line, it uses a 3G, 4G or 5G mobile network to get you online.

At home, your broadband router creates WiFi using a fixed internet connection. MiFi does the same job, but uses mobile networks instead, which means you can stay connected anywhere there’s a mobile signal.

Is MiFi good for gaming?

MiFi can work for gaming in some situations, but it’s not usually the best option compared to home broadband, especially for fast-paced or competitive games. MiFi might be a reasonable choice if:

  • You’re playing casual or less latency-sensitive games (e.g., mobile titles, turn-based games).

  • You have strong 5G coverage with good signal.

  • You’re away from home and just want to play on the go or as a backup

However, is you’re playing competitive online gaming like shooters or real-time multiplayer where low ping really matters, MiFi then is not ideal. If gaming is a priority, and you’re mostly at home, fibre broadband is the best choice for performance and consistency.

MiFi vs mobile hotspot: what's the difference?

You might wonder how MiFi differs from using your phone as a mobile hotspot. While both do a similar job, MiFi has a few advantages.

  • Dedicated device: MiFi doesn’t drain your phone battery or interrupt calls and notifications.

  • Stronger connection: MiFi devices are built to manage multiple connections more efficiently than a phone hotspot.

  • Better security: With its own network and password, MiFi can be more secure than public WiFi or tethering.

For frequent travellers or remote workers, MiFi is often the more reliable and convenient option.

How easy is MiFi to set up?

Setting up MiFi is simple:

  1. Insert your data SIM

  2. Switch the device on

  3. Connect your devices using the WiFi name and password

There’s no need to install software or book an engineer visit, making MiFi a quick and convenient way to get online.

Staying connected, wherever you are

MiFi brings the freedom of WiFi beyond the home. It’s a simple, portable way to stay online, whether you’re travelling, working remotely, or just need a reliable backup connection.
