Your home WiFi is the quiet workhorse of your household. From streaming the latest series to downloading huge game files or keeping every smart gadget online, it’s your silent, hardworking family member that sits in the corner, keeping out of trouble.
Every Virgin Media broadband package comes with Essential Security built-in to help keep your home network secure, protecting you quietly in the background.
And if you’re looking for an extra layer of defence, there’s more on offer. Our Advanced Security option is designed to suit different needs and match how you live online, from everyday browsing to managing multiple devices on the go. You can try it with a free three-month trial.
But even the most dependable network deserves a little care. Over time, weak passwords, outdated settings, or extra devices can leave your connection open to prying eyes. A quick security check-up now and then can help keep your data safe and your signal strong.
Easy WiFi security tips to protect your home network
)
A quick WiFi safety check-up now and again is never a bad idea. In fact, why not consider it part of your spring cleaning?
Here are five simple ways to boost the online security in your home.
1. Consider your Hub’s position
You might already know that finding a central spot in your home for your Hub (otherwise known as a router) makes sense from a signal strength and connectivity point of view – but finding the right spot is also key if you don’t want to share your WiFi with a neighbour. If you position the Hub away from an exterior or shared wall, it helps to keep your WiFi signal confined to your own household.
2. Check your connected devices
It’s easy to check how many devices are hooked up to your WiFi by downloading the clever My Virgin Media app. You’ll find them all listed in the My devices section. Spot any unfamiliar devices lurking there? You can use the app to pause or disconnect them from your WiFi immediately.
3. Change the default WiFi password
It might come as a surprise that more than 80% of people have never changed their WiFi password, leaving their home network exposed. All our Hubs (like most routers) have a unique passphrase that you’ll need to access your WiFi. We suggest that you change this passphrase regularly to something only the members of your household will know.
And remember, the best passphrases include at least 12 characters with a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers. The simplest way to change your password? Via the My Virgin Media app, of course – just select WiFi Networks from the menu in the Broadband tab.
4. Hide your network name (SSID)
The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is the name given to each Hub network – it’s the one that appears on your device when you or another user are scanning for available WiFi networks. But did you know that once your Hub has been set up, you can prevent anyone nearby from recognising your SSID? On the WiFi Networks section of the My Virgin Media app, you can also swap the default network name and password for something less recognisable. Check out more information about changing your Virgin Media WiFi password and network name.
5. Keep your Hub up to date
The firmware in our Hub monitors the security for your network, so it’s good to reboot your router once a month to make sure it’s running with all the security patches and updates it needs. Need a little refresher on how to reboot your router? Well, it’s as simple as… turning your Hub off and on again. Yes, really! Once the power is back on, it might take five to 10 minutes for the Hub to start up again.
Advanced WiFi security settings for extra protection
)
If you’re comfortable digging a little deeper into your router’s settings, these next steps give you even tighter control over who can join your network and how your data is protected. They’re not essential for every household, but they’re perfect if you work from home, travel often or simply want the strongest defence against digital snoopers.
1. Limit access with MAC address filtering
Every device has a unique MAC address, which you can think of as being like a digital number plate. Most routers let you create an approved list of these addresses, so only the devices you trust can hop on your WiFi. It’s a little more hands-on, and you’ll need to add new gadgets as they join, but it’s a handy option if you like full control.
2. Use a VPN for extra privacy
If you work remotely, travel a lot or just want an extra layer of privacy, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) keeps your internet traffic encrypted and away from prying eyes, even if you’re using public hotspots. Look for a reputable, paid-for provider (free services can be slow or less secure) and install the app on your laptop, phone and tablet. Once you’re set up, turning it on is usually as simple as tapping a switch. Your data stays encrypted, and your IP address is hidden no matter where you log in.
