Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard and more star in this unmissable adventure from the DC Extended Universe
Aquaman, available from Friday 23 August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12
After appearing in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Justice League, it’s time for one of the comic-book world’s most distinctive superheroes to make a splash of his own in Aquaman, new to Sky Cinema this week!
Jason Momoa (Game Of Thrones) stars as Arthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. His destiny? To become king and unite the land and the sea. But, this being a big-budget blockbuster and all, his ascendance to the throne is about to hit some choppy waters.
His half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson, The Conjuring 2) has grand ambitions of his own, except they mostly involve mayhem, destruction and general chaos. A major war is brewing, but which of these siblings will emerge victorious when the sand on the seabed has settled?
With a stellar cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe and Dolph Lundgren, plus The Conjuring’s James Wan in the director’s chair, Aquaman is the kind of supersized superhero adventure that ticks all the right boxes.
Want to know more? Here are five reasons why you should take a dive into the world of Aquaman on Sky Cinema.
1. It’s mind-blowingly epic
Like, have you seen the trailer? If bigger is better, then Aquaman is the best. This mega-blockbuster immerses you in the magical underwater world of Atlantis and features action sequences so huge your television might just melt at the sheer enormity of it all.
2. Jason Momoa rocks as Aquaman
The Game Of Thrones beefcake looks like he had the time of his life filming Aquaman. Whether it’s delivering killer one-liners, beating the living daylights out of his foes, or just standing there looking like a magnificent, chiselled deity, it’s impossible not be swept away by Momoa’s on-screen charisma.
3. Willem Dafoe still rules
Not that we needed any reminding of his masterly acting skills. Having played the devilish Norman Osborn (aka the Green Goblin) in 2002’s Spider-Man, Dafoe returns to the superhero genre as Nuidis Vulko, Aquaman’s mentor and trusted adviser. If there’s a more distinctive face in Hollywood we would like to see it.
4. The female characters are fierce
From Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of Queen Atlanna to Amber Heard’s performance as Mera, Aquaman boasts two strong female characters who are never far from the thick of the action. It’s hard not to feel surprised when you see Kidman wielding a trident, kicking butt and taking names. Who knew?
5. An octopus plays the drums
Threatening to run away with the film is a CGI octopus that’s briefly playing the drums moments before a fight scene. His name is Topo, and he originally appeared alongside Aquaman in the 1950s. Director James Wan was inspired to include the plucky cephalopod after seeing Mad Max: Fury Road. “If that film could have a guy playing a flaming guitar, I’m going to have an octopus drummer in mine,” he said.
