11 films that came from comic books

We bet you didn’t know all of these movies started life in print

Dystopian dramas are all the rage right now – from Black Mirror to Blade Runner 2049. Despair? We just can’t get enough of it! And if you haven’t seen Ghost In The Shell yet, Sky Cinema is here to sort you out

Ghost In The Shell, available from Friday 26 January in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12. Also available in HD

Set in a near future in which humans and technology are slowly merging to become one, this adaptation of the famous manga comic stars Scarlett Johansson as Mira Kilian – the sole survivor of a cyberterrorist attack that has killed both of her parents, and left her body irreconcilably damaged. As a result, she's chosen as the guinea pig of a secret project in which an artificial body – known as a “shell” – is integrated with her brain. When she begins to work as a counterterrorism operative, things get even more complicated.

With its neon-lit, Matrix-esque landscapes and action sequences that Kill Bill would be proud of, this film manages the difficult task of bringing a beloved manga comic to life with an abundance of style. Of course, no trophies for stating that your Batmans and Spider-Mans started life as comics. But did you know that all of these films have comic and graphic novel origins too?
