Robin And The Hoods

Available from Friday 26 July in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

Get lost in the imaginative world of 11-year-old Robin (Darcey Ewart, To Olivia) and her loyal band of friends The Hoods. When a property developer (Naomie Harris, No Time To Die) dazzles the neighbourhood with promises of turning the local scrubland into community facilities, it’s up to Robin and her friends to defend what has become their magical kingdom. Gwendoline Christie (Game Of Thrones), Mark Williams (Harry Potter), Morgana Robinson (Everyone Else Burns) and Christine Bottomley (Back To Life) co-star in this charming family flick.

What Happens Later

Available from Saturday 27 July in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Meg Ryan was the undisputed queen of romcoms in the 90s so it’s a real joy to see her return to the genre after a long break from the screen with the wistful What Happens Later, which she also directs. Former lovers Willa (Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny) run into each other during an airport layover in bad weather and as the delays mount up, so do the pair’s revelations about their history. Sparks fly, but is the nostalgia strong enough to re-establish the bond between these past paramours?

Jericho Ridge

Available from Sunday 28 July in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

It’s a slow day at the remote sheriff’s office where Deputy Tabby Temple (Nikki Amuka-Bird, Knock At The Cabin) is working – until the building is targeted by a drug cartel who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Without back-up, Temple must do what she can to survive. The directorial debut of British screenwriter Will Gilbey (Rise Of The Footsoldier), this tense thriller has a cast packed with UK talent including Olivia Chenery (Brotherhood), Zack Morris (EastEnders) and Michael Socha (This Is England).

Trolls Band Together

Available from Friday 2 August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

The third film in the Trolls series will delight its young fans, with plenty more colourful animation and musical fun. When perky Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) discovers that her grumpy pal Branch (Justin Timberlake) used to be in the boy band BroZone with his four brothers, she vows to get the group back together and establish the Troll tradition of Perfect Family Harmony – whatever it takes. What it takes is some killer puns, a singalong soundtrack and another amusing adventure with the pointy-haired protagonists. Have fun spotting the guest-star voices including Eric André, Amy Schumer, RuPaul and all of Timberlake’s former NSYNC bandmates.

If You Were The Last

Available from Saturday 3 August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert TBC

“A witty romantic comedy… in space!” sounds like the desperate pitch of a writer who’s out of ideas, but fortunately this sci-fi romcom well and truly fulfils the brief by being funny, romantic and smart. Adam (Anthony Mackie, about to take on the mantle of Captain America in Marvel’s forthcoming Brave New World) and Zoë Chao (Somebody I Used To Know) are astronauts adrift in the cosmos, cut off from the rest of humanity. When all hope is lost, should they find happiness where they can, or cling to the remote possibility of rescue?

Concrete Utopia

Available from Sunday 4 August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

After an earthquake devastates Seoul, just one apartment block remains standing. The residents of Hwang Gung are relieved at first – but as other survivors begin to flock to this haven, they have to make tough decisions about who may and may not enter. As they strive to maintain a peaecful utopia amid the destruction, conflict inevitably arises despite the efforts of elected leader Yeong-tak (Squid Game’s Lee Byung-hun). A creepy psychological thriller spiced with black comedy.

Under The Boardwalk

Available in August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

This animated musical comedy is set under the boardwalk by the Jersey Shore. Armen (voiced by Michael Cera, Barbie) is a local land crab but when he falls in love with sea crab Ramona (Keke Palmer, Nope), it causes tension between their friends and families. But the age-old story turns from Romeo And Juliet to The Tempest when a storm carries the pair out to sea. Can their love lead them back home? It’s a delightful adventure with toe-tapping songs throughout, and the presence of Sopranos actors Steven Van Zandt and Stephen Schirripa in the cast ups the New Jersey authenticity.

Night Swim

Available from Friday 9 August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Retired baseball player Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell, Under The Banner Of Heaven) and his family move into a house with a pool that Ray hopes will help with his rehabilitation from injury. At first he sees improvement, but there are some odd side effects – and then the mysterious occurrences begin. Could the pool be… evil?! Hidden truths emerge from its depths, and Ray’s wife Eve (Kerry Condon, The Banshees Of Inisherin) has to take drastic steps to save her family in this atmospheric supernatural horror from the people behind The Nun and M3GAN.

The Inventor

Available from Sunday 11 August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

Rataouille writer Jim Capobianco writes and directs this animated biopic about the adventures of Leonardo da Vinci in France. After falling out of favour with the Pope by getting a bit too inquisitive about human anatomy, Leonardo travels to the court of King Francis – only to find more opposition to his scientific investigations. Stephen Fry voices the genius frustrated by the world’s seeming indifference to progress, while the cast also includes Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises) and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens), while What We Do In The Shadows’ Matt Berry is the Pope.

Migration

Available in August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

The Mallard family take the big decision to escape the winter snows and head to Jamaica – but their plans go awry when they get waylaid in New York City. It can be a scary place for a country bird, but the family soon find it’s actually full of new friends and exciting adventures. Migration is wonderful, witty family fun from the studio behind the Despicable Me movies, with a voice cast including Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level), Keegan-Michael Key (Wonka) and Peep Show’s David Mitchell.

Arcadian

Available in August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Nicolas Cage lends his particular brand of off-kilter intensity to this post-apocalyptic chiller as Paul, a man living in a remote farmhouse with his two teenage sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins). By day the family hunt, forage and plan for the future as best they can; by night, they set up defences against the strange and terrifying creatures that roam the landscape. But when Thomas fails to return one evening, their carefully created structure is shattered, and Paul must risk everything to save his family. Get ready to have your nerves well and truly racked.

Daddio

Available in August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert TBC

A young woman steps into a cab at New York’s JFK Airport, and strikes up a conversation with the driver. That’s the premise and, essentially, the plot of this fascinating film, as the two strangers talk love, communication, generational conflict, technology and much more. First-time writer/director Christy Hall’s dialogue teases out surprising truths and unexpected wisdom, as well as some emotional revelations. Like a car-bound, platonic Before Sunrise, this is an engrossing two-hander that shows the vast potential of simple conversation. Dakota Johnson (The Lost Daughter) and Sean Penn (Licorice Pizza) star.

Madame Web

Available in August in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

It’s Dakota Johnson again, starring as paramedic Cassie Webb, who develops the power to see the future. She’s initially disconcerted – but then realises she can change the course of events yet to come. After identifying three young women whose potential abilities have made them the targets of the nefarious Ezekiel (Tahar Rahim), she helps them stay one step ahead of him. When Ezekiel turns out to be connected to her mother, Cassie must confront her own past… This suspenseful superhero thriller is set in the same Spider-Man-adjacent universe as the Tom Hardy Venom movies.
