Part soft-reboot, part sequel to David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (based on author Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel), The Girl In The Spider’s Web sees the return of everybody’s favourite badass computer hacker. This time, she’s ensared in a web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt government officials.
The titular antihero is played by the brilliant Claire Foy (The Crown), who’s shaken off her jewelled headpiece to become a bona fide action hero, following in the footsteps of franchise alumni Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara. With plenty of thrilling set pieces, epic chases and more breathtaking fights than a night out at the boxing, this is one Spider’s Web you won’t mind hanging around your house.
Fired from the National Security Agency, Frans Balder (Stephen Merchant) seeks out the elusive Salander in a bid to enlist her help to steal Firefall, a dangerous computer program that grants access to nuclear launch codes. Balder believes the program is too dangerous to exist in anybody’s hands, and implores Lisbeth to destroy it for good.
Naturally, things don’t go according to plan. The NSA mistakenly believes that Lisbeth wants to keep Firefall for herself and move to stop her – at any cost. As if that wasn’t enough to contend with, further problems arise when a crime syndicate intercepts the program and kidnaps the only person capable of making Firefall work.
Can Lisbeth and an unlikely ally recover the program and avert a disaster? And how does the hacktivist’s troubled past play into the proceedings? You can watch it all unfold on the Virgin Media Store.
