Get into the Christmas spirit and explore the lay of the land in this epic fantasy film, available on Sky Cinema

Need something to get you into the festive spirit? Look no further than this fantastical fantasy…

The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, available from Friday 8 November in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

With just one month to go until Christmas (but who’s counting, right?), now is the perfect time to revisit a familiar fantasy land. Disney’s The Nutcracker And The Four Realms practically screams mince pies, bundles of blankets, a cosy night in and… Tchaikovsky. The film takes inspiration from ETA Hoffmann’s short story The Nutcracker And The Mouse King, as well as Marius Petipa’s renowned ballet, to breathe new life into a classic tale that has delighted audiences for decades.

It’s Christmas Eve in Victorian London and Benjamin Stahlbaum (Matthew Macfadyen, 2005’s Pride & Prejudice) is recently widowed. Before his wife died, she left gifts for their son and two daughters. Middle child Clara (Mackenzie Foy, Interstellar) receives a locked egg-shaped box with a note from her mother, but no key.

At a Christmas Eve ball hosted by the children’s godfather and engineer extraordinaire Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman), Clara follows a long, suspended piece of string with her name on it, which leads her to a magical parallel world where she’s addressed as “Princess” and “Your Majesty”. She learns that the key to her locked box is somewhere in this land, but retrieving it means navigating a war between the Four Realms.

Clara joins forces with Captain Phillip Hoffman (Jayden Fowora-Knight, Ready Player One), the only nutcracker in the Four Realms. Originally a toy, he was brought to life to serve as a heroic soldier who will stop at nothing to protect Clara and his home.
