The big numbers on a very big company

As The Social Network airs on Sony Movies, we shine a spotlight on social media giant Facebook

Discover a world of lies, deceit and betrayal in this Oscar-winning drama about the birth of Mark Zuckerberg’s social media platform

The Social Network, Tuesday 15 October, 9pm, Sony Movies (CH 425)

It’s not easy being one of the most powerful people in the world, as this thrilling biographical drama attests.

Directed by David Fincher and underpinned by a typically razor-sharp screenplay from The West Wing’s Aaron Sorkin, this award-winning movie tells the incredible story of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and how he came to create the social media juggernaut we know and love/hate today.

Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) gives a characteristically nerdy and neurotic performance as Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard who creates a social media platform that grows in popularity beyond his wildest dreams. But the road to becoming an eye-wateringly wealthy tech titan is a tough one, littered with obstacles.

From a damaging rift between “Zuck” and his close ally Eduardo Saverin (The Amazing Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield) to accusations of plagiarism and an initially near non-existent private life that ironically sees him with few close friends, there’s very little to “Like” for the embattled entrepreneur. But hey, nobody said amassing a fortune of more than $60 billion was easy.

The Social Network was widely praised on its release in 2010, deservedly earning a host of top awards, including three BAFTAs and three Oscars. The eerie atmospheric electronic soundtrack provided by musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is a haunting highlight.
