The latest (and possibly final) instalment of Pixar’s pioneering franchise must be seen to be believed
Toy Story 4, available from Friday 14 February in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U
Pixar, we salute you. We bow to your brilliance. We worship at your CGI feet. When you announced you were making a fourth Toy Story, many expected you to trash what was a truly stunning trilogy of animated blockbusters. Then you went and smashed it out of the park… with a main character who literally thinks they’re trash!
Toy Story 4 might not just be the best film in the series, it could well be the best film the studio has ever put out. A bold claim for sure, but if you don’t believe us, why not check it out for yourself on Sky Cinema?
When a toy named Forky (more on him later) joins Woody, Buzz and the gang, it’s up to Woody to convince the new guy that he has value in this world. But things soon go haywire when the pair accidentally embark on a road trip packed full of danger, fun, more danger and self-discovery. Can Buzz and the other toys find them? Or could this finally be it for the group?
Before you tune into Toy Story 4 on Sky Cinema to find out, here’s why we think this box office smash could be the greatest instalment in the series…
All hail Forky!
You won’t be forgetting the newest member of the Toy Story gang in a hurry. This anxiety-ridden spork (voiced by Arrested Development’s Tony Hale) is stuck in an existential crisis; constantly questioning who he is and why he’s here. This insecure – but extremely endearing – little fella has captured the hearts of pretty much everyone who’s watched the film.
The animation is incredible
The Toy Story movies have continually raised the bar for stunning graphics, but with Toy Story 4 Pixar has taken that bar and lobbed it into orbit. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, which is no mean feat considering it took the studio between 60 and 160 hours to render a single frame. There’s also a cat that looks so real you’ll want to reach out and stroke it. Just compare it to the dog in the original and you’ll see how far CGI animation has come.
It’s packed with pathos
Yes, we all know how Toy Story films love to give us all the feels. However, Toy Story 4 runs with this tried-and-tested hallmark of the franchise and cranks it up to 11. Emotional reunions, musings on mortality and the theme of belonging are at the heartfelt core of this movie. Stock up on hankies, because you’re gonna need them.
Lights! Camera! Lots of action!
Compared to the previous three instalments, Toy Story 4 goes all out in ramping up the breathless action sequences. This fast-paced flick flies by in a flurry of scenes that will have you on the edge of your sofa – and it rarely takes its foot off the gas. Forget Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, these plucky toys are the heroes we need right now.
The voice cast rocks
From Get Out director Jordan Peele and The Lion King’s Keegan-Michael Key as a pair of colourful stuffed toys to Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as a sinister talking doll, it’s a mightily impressive voice cast joining series regulars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. And did we mention Keanu Reeves is also in it? The Hollywood star voices Duke Caboom, an Evel Knievel parody suffering from a lack of confidence. It’s among his best-ever performances.
