Wham, bam, thank you, Jan…

Virgin Movies to rent

All hail January! Yes, you heard us right – we’re actually singing the praises of the month that causes most people to make a face like they’ve just licked a bouquet of stinging nettles. Because, if you’re being honest with yourself, what’s not to love about January? Sure, it’s cold and miserable outside but, unlike December, everyone is content to nest down and chill out.

On Virgin Movies this month, there’s a whole host of brilliant films. Whether you’re looking for all-out action, something a bit more cerebral or one that’s a bit in between, there’s bound to be something for you. So, unlike the gym membership you got on 2 January and still haven’t used, let’s get to it…

Rambo: Last Blood

Rambo: Last Blood, available to rent on Virgin Movies from Monday 20 January. Cert 18

As the title suggests, from a film series that began with a First Blood starter, this is very much the franchise’s just desserts. Sylvester Stallone returns as the titular John Rambo on one final revenge mission. Expect his usual diplomacy and long speeches. Wait, that’s the wrong film. No, this is all-out action and violent as anything.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, available to rent on Virgin Movies. Cert 15

Fun fact: “scary stories to tell in the dark” is also what Londoners do when they discuss house prices just before bed. However, this horror film (directed by André Øvredal and with a story by producer Guillermo del Toro) taps into more universal fears for a younger audience. It’s full of twists, turns and tension – best leave the light on.

The Informer

The Informer, available to rent on Virgin Movies. Cert 15

This is a pacy action thriller with real bite. The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman stars as an ex-con and former special ops soldier who intentionally gets incarcerated in order to infiltrate the mob at a maximum-security prison. Also starring Academy Award nominees Rosamund Pike and Clive Owen as FBI agents.

The Goldfinch

The Goldfinch, available to rent on Virgin Movies from Monday 20 January. Cert 15

Adapted from Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller of the same name, The Goldfinch tells the story of a young boy taken in by a wealthy New York family after his mother is killed in a bombing. Beautifully filmed and starring Nicole Kidman, it’s a tale of grief, guilt, reinvention, redemption and, of course, love.

The Kitchen

The Kitchen, available to rent on Virgin Movies from Monday 27 January. Cert 15

Not to be confused with the Itchen at Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium. Instead, Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss star as the wives of New York gangsters, who continue to run their husband’s businesses after the men are put behind bars. Set in the 1970s, it’s a slice of retro-cool crime drama that you’ll love.
