It doesn’t matter if you’re a Mean Girl or a Rebel Without A Cause, everyone has their own personal favourite film about growing up…
Stand By Me, Tuesday 14 August, 9pm, Sony Movie Channel (CH 425)
The coming-of-age movie has always been hugely popular, and with good reason. Whatever age you are and whichever era you grew up in, there is something in each of these stories that we can all relate to. Because, to one degree or another, we’ve all been there.
Struggling with expectations, striving to define who we are, rushing to leave our childhood behind (and then lamenting its passing) – all these themes and more are juicy material for the coming-of-age film. And Rob Reiner's 1986 classic Stand By Me has all these and more besides, as four young friends (played by River Phoenix, Jerry O’Connell, Wil Wheaton and Corey Feldman) head out on an adventure that will change all of their lives.
But which movie is the ultimate example of the genre? Vote for your favourite from our carefully considered top ten below.
