Women in black

Discover who’s who in Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed heist movie Widows as it comes to Sky Cinema

Guns, gangs and great escapes… these are not your usual widows!

Widows, available from Friday 4 October in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Are star-studded, high-octane, unrelenting thrillers right up your alley? Then you’re going to love Widows, the critically beloved latest from Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave).

Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) took charge of the script for this juiced-up reworking of the 1983 British TV series of the same name. She transports the story to modern-day Chicago, where the risks are greater and the stakes far higher.

The ensemble cast is headed by Viola Davis. She plays Veronica, who is widowed when her husband Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson) is killed, along with his gang, in a botched getaway after stealing $2million from crime boss Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry). To Manning – and his enforcer brother Jatemme (Daniel Kaluuya) – this means only one thing: Veronica has to pay.

But paying up quietly isn’t exactly in Veronica’s plans. Why would it be when she stumbles upon a way to pull off a megaheist of her own and has a crack team comprised of the widows of Harry’s colleagues to help her?

A brilliant intertwining of deep characters, murky politics and brutal criminality, Widows is about to give you the ride of your life.
