The format

You’ll witness the best of the best taking to the field in London – apart from Chile, who failed to qualify. Keep a particularly close eye on Argentina, Australia and Germany, who have each won the tournament twice. But when it comes to the big favourites, look no further than the Netherlands, who won a record seventh world title in 2014.

What about England?

England are ranked second in the world and automatically qualified for the tournament because it’s in their back yard. Coached by Danny Kerry (who’s also in charge of Great Britain), they’re in with a great shot of winning their maiden world title this year. But first they’ve got to negotiate a tricky group that includes India, the USA and Ireland.

Who could fire England to glory?

A handful of stars in the England squad helped secure a gold medal for Britain at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Alexandra Danson (above), Maddie Hinch, Giselle Ansley and Laura Unsworth all have masses of experience at international level, and will be pivotal in deciding whether the hosts get their hands on the trophy.
