The best teams. The biggest names. The ultimate prize. Get ready for four weeks of world-class action…

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019, from Friday 7 June, 7.30pm, BBC One HD (CH 101/108)

Let’s face it, summer is just so much better when you’ve got a major international football tournament to watch. Over the next month follow all of the action from France as the very best nations in the women’s game go head to head for sporting supremacy (and a rather nice trophy) at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

From reigning champions USA to fearsome opposition such as Germany, France, Canada, Australia and Japan, there are contenders to the throne wherever you look. And that includes England, who are currently ranked third in the world.

After finishing third at the 2015 World Cup (and winning this year’s SheBelieves Cup) the pressure is on the Lionesses to show the world they’re the real deal and that they can go all the way this time around. Managed by former Manchester United and Everton defender Phil Neville, England have been drawn in a tough group against Scotland, Argentina and 2011 champions Japan, but Neville is convinced his talented set of players can do themselves justice.

“We’ve got a squad that is highly motivated, that now has the confidence and belief to go to a World Cup to be successful,” he says. “We keep saying it but the hard work starts now and we are going to give it everything we have to make the nation proud.”

Football didn’t come home last summer, but there’s a very real chance it will this time. Neville’s 23-strong squad boasts some genuine stars, including a defender he believes is the very best player in the world right now. Here, we pick out six members of the Lionesses who you’re sure to hear more about over the coming weeks. Just click/hover on the stickers below to find out more…
