By Chris Miller, Feature Writer
Five English teams are still in the hunt for European trophies as the three competitions reach their latter stages. Arsenal (pictured above celebrating their penalty shoot-out win over Porto), Man City, Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa all face tough quarter-final ties this month, and you can see every match live on TNT Sports. There’s plenty more football on too, from Serie A and Australia’s A-Leagues to the National League North and South – including plenty of Premier League action.
With the Men’s Six Nations done and dusted, both the European Champions Cup and Premiership return, with all the European ties live on TNT Sports – with every other team striving to stop La Rochelle scoring a hat-trick of titles – and lots of domestic action too.
Elsewhere there’s basketball, with London Lions in the semi-final of the EuroCup as well as NBA games, MotoGP, UFC, rallying, baseball, cricket, Aussie Rules and more as TNT Sports brings another packed month of live sport to your telly.

West Ham have Jekyll-and-Hyded it big time this season, with impressive wins (away at Arsenal, home to Man Utd) counterbalanced by crushing defeats (away to Fulham, home to Arsenal). When they host Spurs just after Easter – one of eight midweek games on TNT Sports in the first week of April – we’re intrigued to see which version of the Hammers turns up. If they win, they could inch closer to another European qualification.
Speaking of teams with European ambitions, West Ham also face Newcastle this month on TNT Sports – although after a tricky season, those aspirations may be a step too far for Eddie Howe’s men. They’re on three times this month, and home wins against West Ham, Everton and Spurs could push them in the right direction.

Fans of holders Man City won’t have been delighted to draw Euro mega-giants Real Madrid at this stage, but they should bear in mind that they battered Real in the semi-final last year on their way to winning the trophy. Admittedly that was before Jude Bellingham arrived in Madrid. Could he make the difference this year? City will be glad the second leg is at home.
And it’s a return to north London for Harry Kane, whose Bayern team drew England’s other remaining representatives, Arsenal. Kane has 14 goals in 16 matches against the Gunners, who have struggled to translate their prolific domestic form into European dynamism. We can expect Bayern to be a little more open defensively than Porto, though. Elsewhere, Atlético face Dortmund and PSG meet Barcelona.

West Ham – them again! – are rewarded for their hugely impressive 5-0 demolition of Freiburg in the last round with a tie against Bayer Leverkusen, who are top of the Bundesliga and unbeaten in all competitions this season. A nerve-racking prospect, no doubt, but the Hammers are experienced European campaigners now and could well find a way past Xabi Alonso’s team. First and foremost they’ll need to stop the much-coveted goalscorer Serhou Guirassy.
Better news for Liverpool, whose opponents Atalanta have slipped behind the leading pack in Serie A after a period of pretty ordinary form. With players coming back to form and fitness, the Reds have to be favourites for this competition – as long as their arduous Premier League title challenge doesn’t take it out of them. There’s an all-Italian tie between AC Milan and Roma, while Portuguese champs Benfica face Marseille.

Aston Villa could hardly have asked for a tougher draw in the Europa Conference League last eight, with Lille having a fine season in Ligue 1. At least they won’t have to travel too far – and captain John McGinn will be nicely rested after his domestic suspension. The Birmingham side are well in with a chance of winning this trophy, although if they see off Lille they’ll have to negotiate a semi-final against Olympiacos or Fenerbahce, both notoriously hostile stadiums for away teams.

Football: UEFA Women’s Champions League
Chelsea have been attempting to disrupt the Lyon-Barcelona duopoly (the two have won the last eight Champions Leagues between them), coming closest in 2021 when they reached the final against Barcelona only to find themselves 4-0 down before half-time. This season, with manager Emma Hayes poised to leave for the USA national team job, the Blues will be extra determined – but they’ll have to do it without injured star striker Sam Kerr.
First they’ll have to get past Dutch champions Ajax; if they can, they’ll expect to meet Barcelona – with Ballon d’Or winners Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas, as well as England’s Keira Walsh and Lucy Bronze – in the semis.

Football: National League
This month you can see action from the National Leagues North and South, the sixth tier of English football. Tamworth have dominated the northern division this season, building a huge league and looking assured of promotion; they visit King’s Lynn, who have put together an impressive recent run to rise out of the drop zone. In the southern version, Worthing and Bath are both aiming for the play-offs at the very least, although after recent defeats both will be anxiously looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack.
There’s also a chance to see the team that have carried all before them in the National League this season, as leaders Chesterfield welcome Boreham Wood to the SMH Group Stadium. Then there’s an Easter clash between play-off contenders Solihull and Barnet.

Inter look like they’ve got the title wrapped up, but there are still interesting stories elsewhere in Serie A (and we’re not just talking about Lecce sacking their manager, Roberto D’Aversa, after he headbutted Verona’s Thomas Henry). After a couple of decades of chaos and a few years of mid-table stability, Bologna are suddenly looking like contenders. A run of six consecutive victories took them into the top four in early March, and they ran Inter close in a 1-0 home defeat.
Their star man? Scotland attacking midfielder Lewis Ferguson, whose red-hot form has reportedly attracted attention from the likes of Juventus. This month i Rossoblù face rock-bottom Salernitana on Easter Monday as they attempt to qualify for the Champions League for the very first time.

Le Classique doesn’t compare to other great football rivalries for longevity – PSG, after all, were founded only in 1970 – but it’s just as fiercely contested. And although it’s only in recent years that the Parisians have come to dominate French football, they’ve had the edge over Marseille for some time, including eight consecutive wins in the 2000s. The overall tally reads PSG 36 victories, OM 32 ahead of their clash on Easter Sunday.
Marseille are well off the pace in the title race but anything can happen in a match like this, and the likes of Brest, Lille and Lens – the latter two also playing a derby over Easter – will thank Les Olympiens if they can take points off Paris.

Football: Liga F
Is any team in Europe as dominant as Barcelona are in Liga F? Aitana Bonmatí, Salma Paralluelo and co have been smashing opponents into dust as usual this season, with an 8-0, three 6-0s, a 5-0 and a 9-1 under their belt in 2023/24. The surprise? They drew one match, and it was at home – to Levante.
The Valencians will welcome the Blaugrana to their own stadium in Buñol on Easter Sunday, live on TNT Sports. Could they pull off another result? Or will Barça put them to the sword this time with their mesmerising passing game? Before that, the Catalans travel to their traditional rivals Real Madrid, who have never beaten them in women’s football. There’s a first time for everything.

Football: A-League Women
After eight rounds of the A-League Women’s season, Western United were going nowhere. They’d lost half their games, sat seventh in the table and seemed set for a season of underachievement. But replacing head coach Mark Torcaso with former Western Sydney boss Kat Smith proved a masterstroke. Their form turned around and with just three games to go, they sat top.
They then slipped to a home defeat by Newcastle and their final league games are tricky away fixtures at Western Sydney and Central Coast (both live on TNT Sports), but with Chloe Lorgarzo and Hannah Keane banging in the goals, they’re in good shape to secure first place ahead of the play-offs. The Grand Final is on the first weekend of May.

Football: A-League Men
The race for first place is a tight one between Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners, but further down the league it looks like being an even closer battle for the sixth and final play-off spot between Western Sydney Wanderers, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City. The latter may have found some momentum with a 7-0 win over their rivals from Sydney, but they’ll need to keep that form going – and they haven’t won more than two games in a row all season. As we reach the knockout stage, the question is: can anyone stop La Rochelle and Leinster reaching the final? The two sides have contested the previous two finals and they’re still the top-ranked teams in the competition, which means seeding has kept them apart until another potential rematch in the final. Stormers pulled the shortest straw and face the champions in Cape Town, while Leicester are tasked with halting Leinster’s progress.

Two of the world’s top white-ball teams meet in New Zealand this month as England’s women commence a tour that incorporates five T20s and three ODIs. English all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, batters Alice Capsey and Danni Wyatt and spinner Sophie Ecclestone – who’s top of the world bowling rankings for both T20 and ODI – have honed their form in the Women’s Premier League, but unfortunately that means they’re not available for England until the fourth T20.
Heather Knight will have to demonstrate all her captaincy skills to ensure that the White Ferns, expected to be at full strength, don’t build an unassailable lead before then. It promises to be an intriguing and high-quality string of matches. Look out for the men’s Test series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka too.

The women of the UFC take centre stage at the end of March. A headline bout in Las Vegas sees Amanda Ribas take on former strawweight champ Rose Namajunas, with a Karl Williams v Justin Tafa heavyweight clash on the undercard. A week later the UFC moves on to Atlantic City, where the night will be headlined by another flyweight fight, this time between Erin Blanchfield and Manon Fiorot.
There’s another Fight Night on 6 April (with headliners to be confirmed) before the UFC reaches its landmark 300th title event. It’s back in Vegas, and is scheduled to feature light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira defending his belt against Jamahal Hill, who was forced to give up the title last year when he was unable defend it owing to injury. Hotly tipped Jorge “The Martinator” Martín got off to a flying start in Qatar, winning the sprint race and qualifying on pole for the Grand Prix. As we all know, though, in racing it’s not where you start that counts but where you finish. And it was defending champ Pecco Bagnaia who took the chequered flag and maximum points. Brad Binder claimed second place in both races to push Martín into third in the championship, but of course there’s a long way to go. This month the MotoGP season heads for the Algarve – and then it’s on to one of the Meccas of motor racing, Indianapolis.

Two top-three finishes in Monte Carlo and Sweden weren’t enough to push the British pair Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin to the top of the World Rally Championship standings, but they’re right in there fighting. Belgium’s Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe lead the table ahead of the Safari Rally in Kenya, where the terrain will offer a very different challenge for the driving teams.
Last year’s winning duo Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen won’t compete in every race of the 2024 season thanks to Rovanperä’s desire for some time away from the car, giving others a chance to challenge.

Jaguar and Chinese-owned, Silverstone-based Envision are also competing, while India’s Mahindra team have their HQ in Oxfordshire. Basketball: EuroCup
Whatever happens from now on, this is far and away the London Lions’ best European season ever. They had never got past the group stage before and now, after impressive knockout victories over Türk Telekom Ankara (100-77) and U-BT Cluj-Napoca (91-79), they’re in the EuroCup semi-finals. There they’ll face Paris, who have put in a similarly formidable performance in their first European campaign, in a three-game series.
The Lions’ Matt Morgan and Conor Morgan – no relation – have both claimed Player of the Round awards over the season and will go toe-to-toe with Paris’s star player, the superbly named TJ Shorts II. Whoever progresses will face either Bourg of France or Beşiktaş of Türkiye in the final.

Basketball: NBA
The 11 founding teams of the Basketball Association of America (precursor to the NBA) included such largely forgotten names as Chicago Stags, Pittsburgh Ironmen and Providence Steamrollers. The only original teams still going in the same form are the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, and the Celtics clearly aren’t feeling the effects of age because they’re the stand-out performers in the NBA this season.
The addition of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday last summer and the continuing excellent form of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have made Boston a force to be reckoned with. This month they host the Bucks and visit the Pelicans – with both games live on TNT Sports – as they surge towards the play-offs.
