With Wembley in sight, it’s all about keeping your nerve in rugby league’s most historic competition
Ladbrokes Challenge Cup semi-finals, Sunday 5 August, from 12.15pm, BBC One/HD (CH 101/108)
And then there were four. The Ladbrokes Challenge Cup has reached the semi-final stage, but who’s ready to bulldoze their way into the final at Wembley Stadium on 25 August?
For the first time in the illustrious tournament’s history, both semi-final showdowns will be played on the same day, and at the same venue – Bolton’s Macron Stadium. And with both must-watch matches live on BBC One, you don’t have to miss any of the drama.
The fuse will be lit with a hugely anticipated clash between St Helens and Catalans Dragons, kicking off at 12.30pm. These teams met in the 2007 final, which the Saints won 30-8, but should the Super League leaders expect such a one-sided contest this time around? This competition has a knack of producing upsets, and the Dragons are likely to put up plenty of fiery resistance when they take to the field.
The second semi-final, which gets under way at 2.45pm, also has its share of Challenge Cup history, as Warrington Wolves go head to head with Leeds Rhinos. These sides met in the 2010 and 2012 finals, with the Wolves winning on both occasions. But while Warrington will undoubtedly be smelling blood once again as their opponents continue to struggle in the Super League, you should never write off the Rhinos.
Four teams, one epic day of Ladbrokes Challenge Cup action. Bring it on!
