A historic rugby rivalry for the ages

Before England face Scotland in the Guinness Six Nations, live on BBC One, tackle the stats behind this sporting feud

From their first meeting in 1871 to last year’s dazzling draw at Twickenham, drama is never far away when these two get together

2020 Guinness Six Nations: Scotland v England, Saturday 8 February, 4pm, BBC One HD (CH 101)

When it comes to epic rugby grudges, few are as impassioned as England versus Scotland. Let’s not even try to sugar-coat it: the long and entangled history of these two teams means they just don’t like each other.

Now they’re ready to add another chapter (the 138th, to be precise) to this contuining saga this weekend when they square off at Murrayfield in round two of the Guinness Six Nations, live on the BBC. But will it be Eddie Jones’ title hopefuls or the pumped-up visitors, coached by Gregor Townsend, who will land the Calcutta Cup?

England v Scotland @ the 2019 Guinness Six Nations

The Red Rose have been a thorn in the Scots’ side in recent times, winning an impressive 25 of the last 31 matches they’ve played. But Scotland have tasted victory over their bitter enemies as recently as 2018, when they secured a memorable 25-13 triumph at Murrayfield. And then there was last year’s unforgettable encounter at Twickenham…

It was a clash that had so much drama, everyone involved had to have a good lie down afterwards. England raced into a 31-point lead in the first half, only for Scotland to somehow fight back and put themselves ahead late on. A famous victory was snatched away from the away side with the last play of the match, however, as the hosts salvaged a thrilling 38-38 draw. More of the same this weekend would be great, lads.
