What’s one of the little-known secrets behind a happy, harmonious household? A fast and reliable WiFi connection. And whether you have a house full of kids, are hosting a get-together or don’t want to miss a minute of your favourite sport on telly, our WiFi Guarantee with WiFi Max will support all your plans.
With our WiFi Guarantee with WiFi Max, you’ll enjoy download speeds of at least 30Mbps in every room or get £100 bill credit on your next bill. This goes hand in hand with our self-optimising Intelligent WiFi technology that’s loaded onto our Hubs 3, 4 and 5 and adapts to what’s happening in your home to give you the most reliable WiFi, all the time.
And to help keep things ticking over, our WiFi Guarantee is backed up by our signal-boosting mesh WiFi Pods (if needed) to improve your connection – at no extra cost with our Gigabit Fibre Broadband and Volt packages. You can also add WiFi Max to our M50 to M500 Fibre Broadband packages (without Volt) for £8 a month, with your first WiFi Pod provided automatically. Read on to find out how our mesh WiFi Pods can help keep things running smoothly in your home.
What are WiFi Pods and how do they work?
)
These easy-to-use mesh Pods help to improve and strengthen the WiFi signal throughout your home, even stretching to those tricky-to-reach areas, using mesh WiFi technology instead of electrical wiring. Along with your wireless broadband Hub, they’ll give the strongest possible connection to multiple devices without compromising on performance, allowing everyone in the household to stream shows, play games or browse social media.
Our WiFi Pods constantly adapt and evolve to what’s happening in your home, choosing the best connection for each device and delivering reliable WiFi whatever room you’re in. They also optimise against any interference (accounting for a neighbour’s WiFi, say) automatically. To install a WiFi Pod, follow these simple instructions in our installation guide.
Why might I need one or more WiFi Pods?
)
Your home’s size and layout, as well as various devices, appliances and materials, can all interfere with your WiFi Pods’ signal, so the positioning of your WiFi Pods is just as important as the positioning of your Hub or router. Avoid placing them behind furniture, near electronic-emitting appliances such as microwaves, on extension leads or close to the floor. Instead, install them where they can perform at their best: out in the open, as high as possible and away from other tech devices.
How do I test to see if I need a WiFi Pod?
It’s pretty straightforward using the My Virgin Media app. Follow these steps to find out if you need one.
Go to the My Virgin Media app and click on the “Service status” tab on your homepage. This will direct you through some further options – you’ll need to select the “Broadband” tab, and then “Test your Hub”.
The app will run a service status test first, to make sure there are no issues with our kit or the connections in your home. We’ll automatically receive your service status test results, and they’ll be registered on your account.
After the service status test is run, if you’re having issues with the WiFi signal around your home, the My Virgin Media app will let you know. It will offer you step-by-step help to improve your WiFi coverage, strength and speed around your home.
You’ll be asked to run a WiFi speed test, powered by Cisco. Find a location in your home where the signal is poor – there needs to be some WiFi signal in order for the test to work, and your device needs to be wirelessly connected to the Virgin Media WiFi Hub. We’ll automatically receive your speed test results, and they’ll be registered on your account.
We’ll review your Cisco speed test result and ask you to follow the steps to order your first WiFi Pod.
If you’re getting download speeds of lower than 30Mbps, you could benefit from adding WiFi Max, if it’s not already part of your package.
How do I get a second or third WiFi Pod for my home?
Follow the steps above again, testing your speeds in another area of your home with a weak WiFi signal. Run a Virgin Media service status test on your broadband by using the My Virgin Media app or by clicking here, and if there are no other broadband faults that could be causing the issue, you’ll be able to follow the WiFi signal improvement steps and order a second or third WiFi Pod.
