The star of new Channel 5 thriller The Deceived talks us through his recent cultural highlights

By Virgin TV Edit

If you’re in search of a new psychological thriller to keep you glued to your sofa, look no further than Channel 5’s The Deceived.

Co-written by Lisa McGee (Derry Girls) and her husband Tobias Beer, this dark four-part drama explores what happens when lust turns sour and lives are changed forever. Discover more by watching the trailer below…

When English student Ophelia (Belgravia’s Emily Reid) falls for her married lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan (Emmett J. Scanlan, The Fall) at Cambridge University, their affair turns into something far more sinister when he suddenly disappears.

Eventually finding him in his hometown in Ireland, Ophelia discovers that Michael’s wife, famous author Roisin (Shetland’s Catherine Walker), tragically died in a recent house fire. But a series of strange occurences suggests not everything is quite what it seems. Yep, that was a chill that just went up your spine.

Also featuring Normal People star Paul Mescal (#connellschain) as a confidante to Ophelia while she’s in Ireland, The Deceived is packed with the kind of twists and turns that will keep you guessing right to the last.

Before you catch the first episode at 9pm on Monday 3 August, we spoke with star Emmett J. Scanlan to find out what’s kept him entertained during lockdown…

TV show: I May Destroy You

Find it in Apps & Games > BBC iPlayer

I just finished I May Destroy You. Utterly stunning. Everything about it. The writing. Directing. The look. The acting.

Box Set: Normal People

Find it in Apps & Games > BBC iPlayer

I love how it’s shot and the time they give to the characters and the scenes. They allow everything to breathe. Nothing is rushed. Fantastic show.

Film: Monos

It’s directed by Alejandro Landes. It’s about a group of armed teenage guerrillas assigned to watch over a hostage. Beautiful movie. Check it out.

App: WhatsApp

Nine times out of 10 that’s usually Whatsapp. [It’s] taking over my present moment...

Video game: Detroit: Become Human

I don’t play them anymore. When I was younger I was always drawn to the games that scared me, like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. It’s probably changed a lot since then.

Wait, I tell a lie. I completed Detroit: Become Human a year ago. Our neighbours are big gamers and I used to go over to theirs and play for hours. That game was stunning.

Podcast: Under The Skin With Russell Brand

It’s got to be Russell Brand. He’s great. I’m very spiritual anyway, so I get his vibe, his energy. But his guests are so varied, from spiritual gurus, to scientists, philosophers, comedians, professors and specialists of whatever global phenomenon is messing with our psyche at any given moment.

Documentary: Time: The Kalief Browder Story

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

Truly heartbreaking, and ferociously unjust. After that I suggest you go watch 13th. Staggering.

Guilty Pleasure

I don’t have one. If I derive pleasure from it I don’t feel guilty about it.
