TV shows to banish the January blues

Get stuck into a brilliant Box Set to kick start the New Year, from the best crime series to charming farm drama and more

By Rebecca Tanqueray, Feature Writer

OK, so you’ve played your 20th round of Perudo, you’ve eaten all the chocolate reindeer and you’re feeling a little flat after the festivities… The post-Christmas slump comes to us all, but we’ve got the perfect solution to make you feel better – the Box Set binge! And there’s a great selection of series for you to get stuck into on Virgin TV this January.

For compulsive viewing, nothing beats a compelling crime drama and True Detective is one of the best. Each season of the series covers a different story, with a new, star-studded cast. For more classic sleuthing, Murdoch Mysteries is hard to beat and, with 16 series and five feature-length specials already under its belt, it offers almost endless entertainment. Then there’s the unmissable Reacher – as gritty and gripping as the books it’s based on.

For light relief, there are lots more gentle watches on offer. All Creatures Great And Small is the TV equivalent of a comfort blanket, while the Sex And The City sequel And Just Like That… is the perfect tonic for a grey, winter’s day.

These titles are available in our Box Set Binge collection. If you watch on a Virgin TV 360 box or Stream from Virgin Media, you’ll find the collection in Box Sets & Movies. If you watch on a V6 box, powered by TiVo®, you’ll find it in On Demand (some app content will be on individual apps). Read on for our round up of the best bingeable Box Sets around.

True Detective

Find seasons 1-3 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

Our ideal binge watch has to be a thrilling crime drama that keeps you guessing right to the end, and the award-winning True Detective series is top of our shortlist. With storylines that hook you in, shifting timelines and a succession of all-star cast ensembles, from Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games) to Colin Farrell (The Banshees Of Inisherin) to Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), each season will have you begging for more.

Justified

Find season 1-6 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

This classy crime drama centres on Raylan Givens – a tough deputy US Marshal, dreamt up by storywriter extraordinaire Elmore Leonard. With his own inimitable ways of upholding justice, Givens (played by Timothy Olyphant, Daisy Jones And The Six) becomes a target for criminals and a problem for his superiors as he confronts everything from murder and bank heists to his own tumultuous past. Expect tight storylines, whip-smart dialogue and some good old cowboy-style showdowns. These six electrifying seasons are unmissable.

Murdoch Mysteries

Find seasons 1-16 + feature-length specials in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

This popular Canadian drama series began with a series of TV movies in 2004 and is still going strong almost 300 episodes later. Combining compelling plots with a little bit of history and some ingenious inventions, it’s got a huge global fan base and retains much of the original cast. William Murdoch – a fictional police detective working in Toronto in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – uses radical forensic techniques to solve some of the city’s most gruesome murders. Get hooked and you’ll have enough episodes and specials to see yourself through till spring…

Annika

Find series 1+2 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

The brilliant Nicola Walker (The Split) stars as DI Annika Strandhed in this Scottish black comedy crime drama. Strandhed is a single mum who’s juggling her new role in Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit (cue gruesome underwater crime scenes) with the trials and tribulations of living with her teenage daughter Morgan (Silvie Furneaux, Red Rose). She’s also a bit of a bookworm who can’t help but drop the odd literary reference to camera as she investigates her latest murder. This is dark and thoroughly gripping stuff.

Miss Scarlet And The Duke

Find seasons 1-3 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

For a Victorian laydee, Miss Scarlet (Kate Phillips, Peaky Blinders) is bracingly feminist: the head of a detective agency, she’s feisty, fearless and just a little flirty with her childhood friend William Wellington (Stuart Martin, Jamestown) – aka The Duke. Series creator Rachael New (Trollied) modelled her heroine on Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet, but Eliza Scarlet is far more adventurous over three swashbuckling seasons. Season 4 is due out early next year and we can’t wait for more of this sizzling, bonnet-ripping, period crime drama.

And Just Like That…

Find seasons 1+2 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

More incredible outfits, more dating disasters, more confessions over cocktails – this Sex And The City revival is just the tonic we’ll need on a gloomy winter day. Plus season 2 features a cameo from the much-missed Samantha (Kim Cattrall) and heralds the return of Carrie’s ex Aidan Shaw (John Corbett, My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Once you start, you won’t want to stop.

All Creatures Great And Small

Find series 1-4 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

Debuting in 2020, this was just the cosy and comforting telly we needed mid-pandemic. There was lovely Yorkshire-Dales scenery; there were woolly lambs and fluffy cats; there was wit, drama and kindness. Now we’re at series 4 with the drama just as popular as ever and most of the original cast intact – Samuel West (The Crown) playing Siegfried, Nicholas Ralph (Prey For The Devil) as James Herriot and Rachel Shenton (Hollyoaks) as Helen.

Yellowstone

Find seasons 1-5 in Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge or on Paramount+

A global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world, this western drama starring Kevin Costner and Kelly Reilly follows the Dutton family as they fight to preserve their vast Montana ranch from oil barons, expanding townships and an Indian reservation. Get hooked in January and you’ll have plenty of time to binge the five seasons available ahead of the series’ conclusion, tipped to hit screens in November 2024.

Reacher

Find seasons 1+2 in Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge or in Apps & Games > Prime Video

This screen adaptation of Lee Child’s phenomenally successful book series got a big thumbs-up when it first hit our screens in 2022. Action-packed and atmospheric, it stars muscle-ripped ex-model Alan Ritchson (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as a very plausible Reacher – the ex-army drifter who can’t help but get involved in battling dangerous criminals on his travels. In season 1, he uncovers a cesspool of corruption in a quaint town in Georgia; in the brand new season 2, he investigates the mysterious murders of members of his former army unit. Strap in for the ride!

The Simpsons

Find seasons 1-34 in Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge or on Disney+

The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, The Simpsons exploded into popular culture in 1989 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises, recognisable throughout the world. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are instantly identifiable television icons.

FBI

Find seasons 1-5 in On Demand > Box Set Binge or Box Sets & Movies > Box Set Binge

Always been curious about what happens inside those criminal investigation units? Well, this is the watch for you. Co-creator Dick Wolf, who also produced the long-running, groundbreaking Law And Order, has done his research by embedding a film crew inside the FBI’s New York office to capture real-life, behind-the-scenes goings-on. This series has first-class agents, tip-top analysis, adrenaline-spiked action and super-secret espionage cases – don’t wait to get stuck in.
