9 of the best digital reunions

From The Office and Community, to Stath Lets Flats and Doctor Who, we look at all the feel-good digital reunions taking place during lockdown

By Laura Rutkowski, Staff Writer

Ever since John Krasinski launched his web series Some Good News in March, it has been giving us so much joy. The Office (US) fans practically lost their minds when Steve Carell and his wife Nancy (who plays real estate agent Carol Stills in the series) appeared on the show.

But Krasinski’s latest episode is something else… he invites Maryland couple Susan and John onto the show. John proposed to Susan in the same way Jim (Krasinski) proposed to Pam (Jenna Fischer) on The Office – at a gas station.

Krasinski then proceeds to bring both of their parents and best friends onto the video call and virtually marries them (apparently he’s an ordained minister now)! Making use of his famous contacts, Krasinski then dials in the whole cast of The Office (yes, like all of them), who recreate the dance scene from Pam and Jim’s wedding to Chris Brown’s song “Forever.” You’ll be smiling so big by the end of it, you won’t know what to do with yourself!

Here are a few more of our favourite digital reunions taking place with some of television and film’s biggest stars. So, now we’re just gonna need those dial-in details...

1. Stath Lets Flats

In the eight-minute episode Stath Lets Flats: Lockdowned, the Michael & Eagle team brainstorm how they can let flats without actually taking people to view them. Creator Jamie Demetriou is joined by his sister Natasia, Katy Wix, Al Roberts, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Ellie White.

2. Community

Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, creator Dan Harmon and Donald Glover reunited on a video chat to do a table read of a season 5 episode, which will be available on 18 May. They discuss which Community episodes made them cry, Brie’s work with Netflix, Jeong’s sitcom Dr Ken and Glover’s rise to fame. It’s also revealed that they have a cast group chat, but Glover isn’t included. Brown says, “We assumed you’d be too busy!”

3. Back To The Future

For this episode of Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart web series, which brings together the cast and filmmakers of hit movies, he speaks to Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, as well as Lea Thompson, director Robert Zemeckis and more. To raise money for health charity Project Hope, the actors reenact some of the most famous scenes, including Lloyd reciting: “Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there some problem with the Earth's gravitational pull or something?” Superfan JJ Abrams also joins the call to discuss his love for the film, with the video ending with a performance of “Power of Love” by the Back To The Future musical cast.

4. Line Of Duty

Vicky McClure posted this snap on Instagram of a catch-up with her Line Of Duty co-stars Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar and creator Jed Mercurio. They were about six weeks into filming series 6 of the hit show before they had to suspend production. With the shoot scheduled to last 16 weeks, it’ll still be a while before the AC-12 gang hit our screens again!

5. Doctor Who

For the BBC’s fundraising telethon, The Big Night In, 10 previous Doctor Who doctors, including: Jodie Whittaker, David Tennant, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jo Martin recorded a special message. They thanked real doctors, nurses and medical staff in the UK for all their hard work and dedication.

Who creators such as Steven Moffat, Russell T Davies and more have also been creating new content for global Doctor Who watchalongs organised by Doctor Who Magazine writer Emily Cook. Check out the Lockdown Who YouTube channel.

6. High School Musical

The cast of High School Musical joined Disney's Family Singalong for their first broadcast performance in 12 years. Zac Efron introduced the segment by saying, “I hope you enjoy and remember that we're all in this together.” No prizes for guessing what Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel and more sang... “We’re All In This Together,” of course!

7. The Bill

Ten years after the final season of the drama, the cast donned their police uniforms for this blast from the past. Trudie Goodwin, Eric Richard and Chris Ellison joined Mark Wingett and Graham Cole, changing their background photos from prison bars, to pictures of the fictional Sun Hill Police Station and to images of themselves during their time on the show.

8. Frasier

Frasier stars Kelsey Grammer, Jane Leeves, Peri Gilpin and David Hyde Pierce joined Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley, the hosts of Stars In The House, on Skype to raise money for out-of-work actors. They reminisce about their time on the show, which ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004, with Grammer saying he “fell in love with each and every one” of his co-stars. Hopefully the series reboot that was teased last year really is on the cards!

9. Coronation Street

Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew in Coronation Street, opened up #DansBar to his fellow stars, including Julia Goulding, who plays Shona Ramsey, and Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw. He tweeted that the theme of the call was Woodstock, while another night, they celebrated 20 years of Cleaver being on the soap, with everyone dressing up for the Eileen theme.
