Reliable broadband isn’t about noticing your connection. In fact, it’s about not noticing it at all. When your video calls don’t freeze mid-meeting, when a big gaming marathon doesn’t suddenly drop when you’re one shot from victory or when a massive Super Sunday match streams smoothly in the background – that’s reliability working quietly behind the scenes. No fuss. No on/off resets. No household arguments.
We don’t treat reliability as a bonus feature when it comes to your connection. From investing in our gigabit network across the country to the clever tech and support that work silently in the background, reliability is the foundation on which everything else is built.
That’s why we’ve been awarded the UK’s most reliable broadband experience two years in a row by Opensignal, the leading global provider of independent insights into consumers' connectivity experiences.
We might be best known for our superfast broadband speeds, but reliability is about whether your connection shows up consistently when you need it, and whether problems are rare, short-lived and quickly resolved when they do happen.
Here’s what we’re doing behind the scenes to make your home broadband feel reliable. Because like you, we reckon broadband should just work.
Why broadband reliability has never been more important
)
Reliability doesn’t sound sexy. Just swipe through most people’s dating profiles, and there aren’t a lot of people putting “I’m reliable” as their best foot forward, even when it’s a quality that many people are looking for in a relationship. It means dependability, consistency and trust. If that gives you the “ick”, who hurt you?
Broadband reliability matters because homes are asking more of their connections than ever before. In 2025, broadband data usage rose by 8% as we all streamed, worked, studied and played online more intensively than at any point before. Big moments like major football matches to blockbuster game launches drove huge spikes, often with millions of homes online at the same time.
Yes, superfast broadband speeds are great – you really don’t have to tell us that – but in 2026, a connection that’s only fast some of the time isn’t enough. But a connection that stays available, responsive and stable, even when millions of others are online too, room by room, device by device, that’s essential for our hyper-connected lives.
Opensignal’s UK Broadband Report looks at factors like consistent quality, availability and real-world reliability, and for the second year running, we came out on top.
Reliable starts with a strong network
)
Every reliable home connection depends on the strength of the network underneath it, long before a hub is plugged in and the WiFi password is shared around the family.
We have invested heavily – around £2 billion every year – to make sure our network is built for real-world demand and to deliver the consistency you need. Today, gigabit broadband with speeds of 1,000Mbps and above is available across the entire Virgin Media network, with a major programme underway to upgrade to full fibre to the home (FTTH) technology over the coming years.
This scale and resilience are important. Opensignal’s data shows we deliver a broadband experience that stays available and reliable across more of the day, even as demand rises. That consistency is another key reason why we have been named the UK’s most reliable broadband experience two years running.
Our network also continues to expand. In 2025 alone, gigabit broadband reached more than 139,000 additional homes across towns and cities, including Sheffield, Worcester, Ripon, Bath and communities across Scotland – where we are now the country’s largest gigabit provider, serving more than 1.5 million homes and businesses.
Intelligent WiFi that adapts to real homes
)
Network reliability is only part of the pie. Even the strongest network still has to actually work inside real homes, with thick walls, extensions, busy households, fish tanks, PAW Patrol streaming 24/7 and dozens of connected and smart devices.
Our self-optimising Intelligent WiFi technology that’s loaded onto our Hubs 3, 4 and 5 constantly monitors performance and automatically adapts to changing conditions. So instead of you tweaking settings or troubleshooting while yelling at the sky, our system works in the background to keep connections stable – with more than 300,000 tweaks a day, just so you can experience less WiFi interference and delays.
As you move your devices around your home, Intelligent WiFi will also check on them all to see if they need a nudge onto the best WiFi band. Thanks to this adaptive band steering feature, you should have a faster and more reliable broadband connection.
Older devices that can’t keep up with ultrafast broadband speeds can slow down a busy home WiFi network. But not with Intelligent WiFi. Its airtime fairness feature helps share WiFi throughout the home so all devices (and people using them) get the connection they need from the Hub 3, 4 or 5.
That’s what turns a strong network into a reliable everyday experience in your home.
Our WiFi Guarantee backs up the promise
)
Awards matter – ask our parents – but reliability also means accountability. Fast, reliable internet throughout our homes makes everyday life run more smoothly. That’s why we introduced our WiFi guarantee with WiFi Max. It’s our promise that you’ll enjoy download speeds of at least 30Mbps in every room or get £100 bill credit.
Where coverage is needed in tricky-to-reach areas, our WiFi guarantee is backed up by our signal-boosting mesh WiFi Pods, which can extend your home network – at no extra cost with our Gigabit Fibre Broadband and Volt packages. You can also add WiFi Max to our M50 to M500 Fibre Broadband packages (without Volt) for £8 a month, with your first WiFi Pod provided automatically.
Along with our Hub, they’ll give the strongest possible connection to multiple devices without compromising on performance. Our WiFi Pods also constantly adapt and evolve to what’s happening in your home, choosing the best connection for each device and delivering reliable WiFi, whatever room you’re in. They also optimise against any interference (accounting for a neighbour’s WiFi, say) automatically.
It all adds up to zero signal dead zones around your home and a strong and reliable connection in every nook and cranny.
Smart support before things don’t feel right
)
We all know what it’s like when things don’t work. You start calmly, switching things on and off, before life flashes forward to two hours later, it’s still not working, your t-shirt is soaked with sweat and you’re explaining to the cat why you hate technology.
That’s why we’ve revolutionised the way we keep people online with our smart support, available to all Virgin Media fibre broadband customers at no extra cost – and now with enhanced features, so it’s even better.
Using clever technology, smart support automatically monitors your broadband connection in the background, which enables us to catch and prioritise serious issues. Our tech then looks to solve issues without you even knowing about them, and we’ll aim to provide easy, proactive fixes as soon as possible.
If we spot a serious issue, we’ll start by offering you some simple steps to follow to try and fix the issue yourself – like tightening cables and resetting the Hub. If you don’t have time to do that on the day we reach out, we’ll work to sort the issue remotely overnight while you snooze – so if all goes well, things will be as right as rain by the time you wake.
If the issue’s still there after our remote fix and you’ve tried all our simple steps, we’ve got a team of expert engineers standing by to help. You don’t even need to worry about calling us – we’ll send you an email and SMS with a link to book a free engineer visit to get things in tip-top shape. All you have to do is pick a date and time that works for you.
Recent developments to smart support mean it’s more proactive, faster, smarter, more efficient and more linked up.
Our reliability is something that fades into the background
)
The best measure of reliable home broadband isn’t a speed test or a technical stat (although we do love both of those). It’s the confidence that your connection will just be there, quietly doing its job, day after day.
Being awarded the UK’s most reliable broadband experience two years in a row isn’t about a single feature or moment or because we taught a walrus to drive a boat (true story). It’s the result of sustained investment, intelligent technology and support systems designed to remove friction from everyday life online.
We’ve built reliability into every layer of our broadband service. Because when WiFi fades into the background, your life online can take centre stage.
