Paying tribute to a legend

Paying tribute to a legend

As Bohemian Rhapsody comes to Sky Cinema, we ask a Queen superfan to reveal why it will rock you!

There are no words left to describe the man, the myth, the legend that was Freddie Mercury… but we can certainly give it a go

Queen tribute band Mercury have noticed an upsurge in the number of young fans attending their shows, and frontman Joseph Lee Jackson puts it down to Bohemian Rhapsody, now available in Sky Cinema on demand. “More people now are into Queen than there’s ever been before,” he says.

The film tells us how Farrokh Bulsara moved to England with his family from Zanzibar in the 1960s and united with guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee), drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) and bassist John Deacon (Joe Mazzello) to form the all-conquering Queen. Farrokh, of course, became the inimitable Freddie Mercury (played by Mr. Robot star Rami Malek).

Who better to cast their eye over the film than Jackson? He’s been performing as Freddie for 20 years – the band plays two to three gigs a week across the UK – and has been a Queen fan for almost 30. Even Freddie’s family (including his mother, Jer Bulsara), Taylor and May have heard the band play.

Joseph Lee Jackson is looking fabulous, darling!

“The actual story itself is, like the songs, just magical. It’s quite strange how it was meant to be,” he says of Bohemian Rhapsody. So, we asked Jackson to hang up his cape and crown to discuss some of the Oscar-winning film’s best bits and explain why Queen are not just in fashion because of the film, but that they – and Freddie – are forever.
