10 signs you’re watching a Tim Burton movie

10 signs you’re watching a Tim Burton movie

As Burton’s live-action Dumbo remake reaches Sky Cinema, we look back at the director’s body of work

Dive into Burton’s weird and wonderful world – starting with Dumbo on Sky Cinema!

Dumbo, available from Friday 29 November in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

When you heard Tim Burton – the man behind Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice – was directing Disney’s live-action reboot of the beloved Dumbo, frowning and saying the word “really?!” would have been an entirely acceptable response.

The eccentric film-maker and the adorable baby elephant with outsized ears may not seem like the most natural bedfellows (sharing a bed with an elephant would be difficult for anyone, come to think of it). On the other hand Burton has always been a champion of the outcasts, the oddballs and those who don’t belong, so really… it makes perfect sense!

This remake comes almost 80 years on from the 1941 original, and Disney and Burton make significant changes. The story is extended, and Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito and Michel Keaton are a vital human foil for the heart-meltingly cute title character.

The charm and heart that are defining traits of every Disney flick combine beautifully with Burton’s kooky visual style, and the result is a movie that makes you feel like you’re drifting magically through a trippy yet comforting dream.

It’s quintessentially Disney, and yet quintessentially Burton – just like these 10 TB trademarks…
