Sally Hawkins in Eternal Beauty

5 of the best Sally Hawkins movies

5 of the best Sally Hawkins movies

With the British actress earning great reviews for comedy drama Eternal Beauty, we revisit some of the best performances from her career so far

By Virgin TV Edit

We love Sally Hawkins. The British actress is one of our finest screen stars, a talent who is as much at home in an oddball indie drama as she is an Oscar-winning blockbuster.

Her next film, comedy drama Eternal Beauty, will be released in the UK on Friday 2 October and stars Hawkins as a woman whose breakdown after being jilted at the altar leads to a blurring of the line between fantasy and reality.

Co-starring Alice Lowe, Billie Piper, Penelope Wilton and David Thewlis, the film has been praised for its wit, warmth and off-the-wall comedy – all hallmarks of Hawkins’ career to date.

Here, we pick out five more movies that have helped make Hawkins one of the most sought-after stars in the industry. From idiosyncratic dramas to monster hits, here’s our Sally on screen…

1. Paddington

Find it in Apps & Games > Prime Video

One of the best family films you’re ever likely to see, this quirky caper with a big heart sees the titular bear get into all manner of scrapes after landing in London from Peru. Taken in by the Brown family, who are led by mum Mary (Hawkins) and dad Henry (Hugh Bonneville), Paddington soon himself on the hitlist of Nicole Kidman’s evil taxidermist. Ooh er.

2. Happy-Go-Lucky

Find it in Apps & Games > Prime Video

One of three collaborations between Hawkins and director Mike Leigh (the others being 2002’s All Or Nothing and 2004’s Vera Drake) this 2008 comedy drama won her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Hawkins plays an exuberantly happy school teacher whose relentless optimism doesn’t always go down well with those around her.

3. Jane Eyre

Find it in Apps & Games > Netflix

This 2011 adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel sees Hawkins play Jane’s cruel cousin, Mrs Reed, in a big change of tone from the warm-hearted characters Hawkins is usually associated with. This acclaimed drama from director Cary Fukunaga boasts a mightily impressive cast, including Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Judi Dench and Jamie Bell.

4. Love Birds

Find it in Apps & Games > Prime Video

A romantic comedy starring Sally Hawkins and Rhys Darby from Flight Of The Conchords? Count us in! When Doug (Darby) suddenly finds his world crumbling around him, an injured duck leads him to veterinarian Holly (Hawkins). Sparks fly, but the course of true love never did run smooth…

5. Godzilla

Available now in Sky Cinema on demand

Hawkins may not have all that much screen time, but can you blame her when a giant prehistoric monster has top billing? In this 2014 reboot directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) Earth is besieged by numerous colossal creatures intent on wreaking havoc. Could the misunderstood Godzilla be the planet’s saviour? Co-starring Aaron Taylor-Wood and Bryan Cranston.
