This acclaimed black comedy from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) won enough gongs to fill Buckingham Palace last year (or at least a wing), including an Oscar and a BAFTA for Olivia Colman, who’s on royally good form here as the petulant and unpredictable Queen Anne.
At the start of the 18th century, Colman’s ill monarch leaves the running of England to her confidante and secret lover Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), the Duchess of Marlborough. But when Sarah’s downtrodden cousin Abigail (Emma Stone) turns up in search of work, the royal household is turned upside down.
The charming Abigail begins to grow closer to the Queen, arousing the suspicions of Sarah. What is the newcomer really after? And how will it affect Sarah’s own relationship with Anne? Let the games begin.
Supported by Weisz and Stone, Colman gives a truly memorable performance as the impulsive Queen Anne. Were you really expecting anything else?
