March premieres on Sky Cinema

All the best new premieres to watch on Sky Cinema this month, including Ferrari, The Flash and the huge hit Barbie

By Virgin TV Edit

This month brings a premiere for the already iconic Barbie. If you missed Greta Gerwig’s smash hit on the big screen, now’s your chance to catch up. With its candy-coloured sets, singalong soundtrack and plastic-fantastic performances from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it delivers the dopamine hit of the decade.

For car chases and stunt work galore, there’s Ferrari, the brilliant biopic focusing on the later life of motor racing mogul Enzo Ferrari, or Gran Turismo, the true-life tale of a British teenager who went from video gamer to racing driver.

There’s also lots to keep the kids happy when the holidays start, from doggie antics in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie to sensational superheroics in The Flash and the enchanting animated folk tale Mavka: The Forest Song.

And if you’ve been too busy over the past few months to keep up with all the new premieres on Sky Cinema, scroll down to see our round-up of all the latest titles available in On Demand.

Don’t forget, you can watch hundreds of Sky Cinema titles on up to five devices with the awesome Virgin TV Go app at no extra cost to Sky Cinema subscribers. It’s the perfect way to take a bit of movie magic with you. Find out more about the Virgin TV Go app here.

Read on to find out what’s new on Sky Cinema in March.

Ferrari

Available from Friday 1 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Adam Driver (House Of Gucci) stars in this sleek and heartfelt movie about fast cars and failing relationships. He plays a 59-year-old Enzo Ferrari who, struggling to rescue his company and his marriage, decides to stake his reputation on a victory at one race – the 1957 Mille Miglia. With extraordinary and visceral racing scenes conjured by director Michael Mann (Heat) and a brilliantly icy performance by Driver, this is a biopic not to be missed. Penélope Cruz (The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) and Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) also star.

Mavka: The Forest Song

Available from Saturday 2 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

Based on a play by Ukrainian author and poet Lesya Ukrainka, this beautiful 3D animation is mesmerising. In true fairytale style, forest nymph Mavka faces an impossible choice between love and duty when she falls for young musician Lukash. Can she save the forest, heal the rift between the human and magical worlds and stay true to her heart? With a soundtrack combining traditional Ukrainian folk songs and contemporary music, this is a movie that’s enchanting in every sense.

L’Immensità

Available from Sunday 3 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

Another Penélope Cruz gem, this autobiographical film by Italian writer/director Emanuele Crialese won critics’ hearts at last year’s Sundance festival. Set in 1970s Rome, the story focuses on the struggles of Adri (an impressive performance by 13-year-old Luana Giuliani), who is rejecting her name and her gender, and of her Spanish mother Clare (Cruz) who indulges in childish fantasies to escape her unfaithful and violent husband. A poignant portrayal of family relationships, with an inventive soundtrack.

The Beekeeper

Available from Friday 8 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Scammers who target the vulnerable are just asking for payback, right? And in this great new action thriller from David Ayer (Suicide Squad), they get it in spades. When retired schoolteacher Eloise Parker (Phylicia Rashad, Creed III) is swindled out of $2 million, her beekeeping tenant Adam Clay (Jason Statham, The Meg) is determined to get revenge. That he happens to also be a special agent means a lot of butt gets kicked along the way. Expect all the action tropes you know and love – shoot-outs, bone-cracks and take-downs, along with bee puns aplenty.

The Canterville Ghost

Available from Saturday 9 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert PG

This enjoyably spooky animated film based on a short story by Oscar Wilde introduces us to Sir Simon Canterville (Stephen Fry). He’s been scaring off potential new residents of his country estate for centuries – but he’s powerless to prevent the Otises, an American family, from moving in and installing (gasp!) electricity. And when Sir Simon discovers Virginia Otis (Emily Carey, House Of The Dragon) isn’t afraid of him, a grudging friendship develops. Fry’s former comedy partner Hugh Laurie makes a fun cameo.

Breaking

Available from Sunday 10 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 15

Based on troubling true events, Breaking tells the story of former Marine Brian Brown-Easley (John Boyega, Detroit), who found himself in dire financial straits after being let down by the US government. Fearing homelessness and its ruinous effect on his family, Brown-Easley turned to violent threats to try to get what he was owed – with tragic consequences. Co-written by British playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah, this sobering tale is as much about systemic failure in veteran support as it is about one desperate individual.

The Flash

Available from Friday 15 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

Multiverses might be ubiquitous for superhero movies, but it’s hard to complain when Michael Keaton’s Batman is pulled out of retirement for one last rodeo. Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) tries to use the time-travelling bit of his speedy powers to change the past. But when it significantly alters the future, he’ll need all the allies he can find. The Flash has a lot of fun with the multiverse concept and even gives us one cameo that comic book fans have been awaiting for a long, long time.

Jules

Available from Sunday 17 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) plays Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in this searing dramatisation of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Initially dismissive of intelligence reports about a planned invasion, Meir is caught out by the movements of enemy troops and her army suffers losses. She and her generals must devise a strategy to fight back while avoiding a wider conflict. Golda received an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup And Hairstyling, and you’ll marvel at Mirren’s transformation.

Gran Turismo: Based On A True Story

Available from Saturday 23 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

There was a time when the badge “based on the popular video game” meant a movie or TV show was almost guaranteed to fail. Now, after a string of hits on the big and small screens, that’s no longer this case. Gran Turismo is an unusual video game film in that it’s not a straight adaptation (there is no plot in the racing sim game). Instead, it tells the true story of British teenager Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe, Saltburn), a teenage Gran Turismo player who became a professional racing car driver. It’s a feel-good underdog drama with dazzling action. Stranger Things’ David Harbour and The Lord Of The Rings’ Orlando Bloom also star.

Barbie

Available from Friday 29 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert 12

There have been few films in the history of cinema that have captured the world’s collective attention as much as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The fact the movie, based on the iconic plastic doll, captured our adoration as well demonstrates this wasn’t just clever marketing. It’s the real deal, as demonstrated by nominationsfor Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Academy Awards. Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie, Babylon) goes on a journey of self-discovery when her perfect existence is scuppered by a sudden existential crisis. Throw in a peerless turn from Ryan Gosling as Ken and a speech for the ages by America Ferrera and you have a movie that’s surprising, funny and utterly brilliant.

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie

Available from Friday 29 March in Sky Cinema on demand. Cert U

If you have little ones who love PAW Patrol and the hilarious and heroic antics of the search and rescue dogs, then the release of this sequel to PAW Patrol: The Movie will be music to your ears. (Although maybe not after the 22nd time they’ve asked to watch it.) When a magical meteor crash lands in Adventure City, it gives the pups superpowers, transforming them into The Mighty Pups. See if you can spot some of the famous types lending their voices to the film, including Kristen Bell, James Marsden, Kim Kardashian and Trevor McDonald.
