Can you crack our third-place play-off quiz?

Can you crack our World Cup third-place play-off quiz?

We want to see how much you know about the history of the tournament’s penultimate fixture…

Despite its reputation, this is a match that always delivers the goods…

FIFA World Cup, Saturday 14 July, 3pm, BBC + ITV

To some, it’s totally pointless. To others, it’s an intense matter of national pride – just ask Swedish super striker Tomas Brolin (pictured above)! But whatever your opinion of the World Cup third-place play-off, you can’t say that it’s short on excitement.

With an average of nearly four goals scored per play-off, these encounters often feel less rigid and more free than the hyper-tense, highly tactical battles seen in the final.

Take the most memorable third-place match in recent history, Uruguay v Germany at the 2010 World Cup, which saw five goals scored in total, including this screamer from Uruguay’s Diego Forlán:

Germany went on to win after Thomas Müeller started the scoring with a goal that won him the Golden Boot. The win sent Germany home on a high, and we all remember what happened in Brazil four years later when they met the hosts in the quarter-final on their way to winning the whole thing (if you don’t you can read all about it here).

As we gear up for this year’s showdown at St Petersburg’s Krestovsky Stadium, we thought we’d test your knowledge on the recent history of the tournament’s penultimate game.
