Who will rule the West Country?

As rivals Gloucester and Bath meet in the Aviva Premiership, we highlight what makes this clash so tasty

Grudge matches don’t come much more mouth-watering than this one…

Gloucester Rugby v Bath Rugby, Saturday 28 April, 2.30pm, Channel 5/HD (CH 105/150)

It’s said you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Well, Bath and Gloucester can barely be separated. Just 50 miles apart and practically neck and neck in the table, these clubs are ready to do battle in a massive Aviva Premiership showdown live on Channel 5.

With just two rounds of the regular season remaining, both teams are looking to nab a spot in the top four and reach the play-offs – and boy have they served up some classic encounters down the years.

There was the 2015 free-for-all when Bath ran in seven tries to Gloucester’s four. One year earlier Bath clinched a nail-biting 18-17 victory, earning their first win at Kingsholm since 2006. Most recently, in October, Gloucester enjoyed a 22-21 triumph at the Rec, with Owen Williams’ winning conversion snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with the last kick of the match.

If that gut-wrenching finale didn’t leave a bad taste in the mouth for Bath fans, the news that rampaging winger Matt Banahan, their longest-serving player, is leaving to join Gloucester at the end of the season certainly will.

Revenge, points to prove, all-important bragging rights… it’s all teed up to be a memorable meeting between two of English rugby’s great foes and you can watch it all live on Channel 5!
