Live on TNT Sports this month

Premiership rugby and Champions League football return this month and you can watch them live on TNT Sports – plus UFC, MotoGP and much more

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

Falling leaves, cosy jumpers and Premiership rugby. That’s right, it’s autumn, and that means it’s time for TNT Sports’ coverage of the new top-flight rugby union season. It starts with three live matches over the opening weekend and there’s plenty more to come, with more than 50 live games this season – plus the European competitions, which recommence in December.

There’s absolutely tons of football at this time of year, with TNT Sports bringing you live action from three top leagues – the Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1 – as well as the three UEFA club competitions. Not to mention the National League as well. Whether you’re more interested in Kylian Mbappé or Dorking Wanderers’ star striker Jason Prior, you can watch your favourites in action.

The Major League Baseball season is approaching its sharp end, with teams striving to secure play-off slots and get the chance to make it to the World Series. It’s coming up to the climax of the rallying season too, with a British team in World Rally Championship contention, while in MotoGP there are three high-octane races to enjoy. And with MMA, cricket, WWE, Aussie rules, squash and badminton as well, it’s another packed month of thrilling live sport on TNT Sports.

Remember, you can follow all the live action on TNT Sports wherever you are in the UK, as long as there’s WiFi, 3G or 4G, thanks to Virgin TV Go. Simply download the free app, which is free to all Virgin TV customers and is compatible with Android, iOS, Windows 10 and PC/Mac. Download the Virgin TV Go app.

Football: Premier League

Intriguing match-ups abound in the TNT Sports’ Premier League coverage this month. Promoted Burnley, a team pundits predicted would adapt to the top flight well but who started with three defeats, host Man Utd, who have struggled to nail their most effective line-up. Aston Villa and Brighton, two upwardly mobile clubs, meet at Villa Park, a fixture that ended 2-2 last year. And Tottenham take their new expansive brand of football to the tight confines of Luton’s Kenilworth Road stadium.

Football: UEFA Champions League

The group stage of UEFA’s premier competition kicks off this month, and there are a few ties that catch the eye. Manchester United face Bayern in their first fixture, a match-up that always evokes memories of United’s dramatic trophy triumph in 1999. Celtic travel to Feyenoord and then have a home game against Lazio, a schedule that could see them get off to a flying start.

Meanwhile Newcastle, in the first Champions League campaign for 20 years, welcome Paris Saint-Germain to St James’ Park. Both clubs are seriously flush with cash, and although PSG are further down the road on their “superclub” journey, they’ve never quite done it in this competition. Having lost Leo Messi and Neymar, they’re a team in transition, and Newcastle will be keen to make Europe pay attention to them with a victory.

Football: UEFA Europa League

Liverpool are in the Europa League for the first time since 2015/16, when they reached the final but lost to Sevilla. They’ll be keen to demonstrate they still belong among Europe’s elite by getting that far again, except with a trophy at the end this time. They face LASK of Austria and Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium in their opening Group E fixtures.

Union are Brighton’s sister club – we’re not sure what happens if they come up against each other later on – but for now they’re in separate groups, with the Seagulls hosting AEK and visiting Marseille this month. Conference League winners West Ham are home to Serbia’s TSC and then away at Freiburg, while Rangers face Real Betis and Cypriot champions Aris Limassol.

Football: UEFA Europa Conference League

Aberdeen are the most recent Scottish winners of a European trophy with a Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1983. This is their first UEFA group-stage appearance since 2007/8, and it’s a tough schedule as their first game takes them to 2022 Europa League winners Frankfurt.

Aston Villa last qualified for Europe in 2010, but lost in the UEFA Cup play-offs and didn’t make the groups. Now, though, they have an experienced and successful European manager in Unai Emery, a four-time Europa League winner, and must be counted among the favourites for this competition. They face Legia Warsaw and Bosnian side Zrinjski.

Football: National League

Looking for a great National League story that doesn’t involve big overseas investment? Dorking Wanderers were founded by a group of friends in 1999, when they played in the 11th tier of English football. A series of promotions followed and in 2019 the Surrey club made it to the National League South; three years later they were in the National League, where they finished a respectable 16th in their first season.

In 2018 they moved to Meadowbank stadium, which they’ve upgraded impressively – all in all it’s a real grassroots success story. This month they host Barnet and, naturally, they’ve got their eye on promotion to the Football League.

Football: Serie A

While other leading leagues find themselves dominated by a single club or at best a duopoly, Serie A has had four different champions in four years. Could it be a fifth this year? The departure of Napoli’s scudetto-winning manager Luciano Spalletti makes them less likely to defend their title, while the form of Juventus and the Milan clubs has been all over the place.

The likes of Lazio and Atalanta have been contenders recently, and one of them could make a real challenge for the title. It’s Inter who have made the strongest start though with four convincing wins, including a 5-1 thrashing of their city rivals at San Siro. It’s going to be a fascinating campaign.

Football: Ligue 1

As savvy managers of elite clubs know, France is where you go to find stars of the future. Stars such as Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, who came through Rennes’ youth system, and Aurélien Tchouaméni, who was signed from Monaco. The appearance of talented young players in Ligue 1 first teams is part of what makes this league so unpredictable. Heavyweights Lyon had a poor start and last year’s runners-up Lens fared little better, while Monaco outpaced PSG in the early stages.

Promoted Le Havre and Metz made it to mid-table, while Reims – under young English manager and viral star Will Still – began in top-four form. But, of course, that could all change over the coming weeks. Most intriguingly, PSG have a new longer-term strategy that may take time to gel. Could someone else nip in and claim the title?

Rugby Union: Premiership

The Rugby World Cup may not be over until 28 October but the new Premiership season commences two weeks earlier, kicking off with Leicester’s visit to Ashton Gate, where they played out an entertaining 26-26 draw with the Bears last season. Tune in to see if either can claim the win on the opening Friday. The next day Exeter welcome last year’s runners-up Saracens, as the Chiefs begin their bid to return to the play-off places.

Rugby Union: Premiership Cup

This season the 10 Premiership and 12 Championship teams come together for English rugby union’s cup competition for the first time. Some of the second-tier teams have already scored notable victories, like Coventry’s win over Saracens and Ealing’s 48-22 trouncing of Northampton. The Saints face Championship opposition again this month as Doncaster Knights visit Franklin’s Gardens in the final round of pool matches. Surely the Premiership team will have established dominance by then? You never know… Ahead of that game, you can see Harlequins in action twice.

Motorsport: MotoGP

Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia suffered an opening-lap crash in Barcelona in early September, but his nearest rival Jorge Martín couldn’t take full advantage as Aleix Espargaró claimed the win – and Bagnaia returned to the grid in San Marino to take third place and maintain his lead. The MotoGP season moves on to its Asian leg this month, with races in Greater Noida, Motegi and Lombok. It’s now or never for the likes of Martín and Marco Bezzecchi if they’re going to have any chance of catching the reigning champ.

Motorsport: Rallying + Touring

With just three stages left in the 2023 World Rally Championship, Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin need points and they need them soon if they’re going to catch Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen. The World Rallycross Championship finally restarts in Cape Town after three cancelled rounds following a fire in a team garage at the UK event, while Brodie Kostecki and Shane van Gisbergen are tussling for the Supercars Championship title in Melbourne.

Cricket: Women’s Internationals

The problem with being dubbed “greatest team ever to play the sport” is that it brings extra pressure. It’s not enough for Australia’s women to win a series; they have to dominate and smash the opposition. That’s what made England’s Ashes performance this summer so impressive. Now it’s the turn of the West Indies to measure themselves against this magnificent Aussie team. They’re ranked sixth in the world in both ODIs and T20s going into this series but with aces like batter Stafanie Taylor and off-spinner/captain Hayley Matthews, plus a clutch of young rising stars, they’re capable of pulling off a result or two.

Cricket: Caribbean Premier League

Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders have been head and shoulders above the competition in this season’s men’s CPL. But in their two meetings during the season, the Amazon Warriors scored two comfortable six-wicket victories, with Saim Ayub and Shai Hope smashing half-centuries. If the two meet again in the final, which is still possible, can the Guyanese team repeat their exploits? Or will one of their rivals stage a late run and claim a place in the final? Find out as the league reaches its climax on 24 September.

Australian Rules Football: AFL Men’s

Brisbane Lions (pictured) and Collingwood are on a collision course in the AFL final stages, having finished in the top two places and qualified directly for the Preliminary finals rather than going through the semi-final stage. There, Collingwood will face the Giants of Greater Western Sydney, who they beat convincingly in the regular season back in May; similarly, the Lions saw off Carlton with ease in the early rounds.

The two favourites met just a few weeks ago in the penultimate week of the regular season, a match in which Brisbane ran out comfortable winners. Can the Magpies turn it around and take the title back to Melbourne?

You can see them in action this month at city rivals Hawthorn. Their neighbours – everybody needs good neighbours – in North Melbourne look best placed to challenge them, while Port Adelaide and Geelong are also tipped to do well. Those two meet at the Alberton Oval in week 4 and there’s plenty more AFLW action on TNT Sports in the month ahead.

The men’s singles final of this prestigious tournament came to a disappointing and premature end last year, when Egypt’s Ali Farag was forced to retire with injury after just two points were played. His clash with rising star Diego Elias of Peru had been hotly anticipated and fans will hope it can be repeated in this year’s final – the two are seeded first and second. Look out for England’s Mohamed El Shorbagy, though, who’s scheduled to meet Farag in the semis. In the women’s singles, Egyptian rivals Nouran Gohar (the defending champ, pictured) and Nour El Sherbini will be the favourites at the Arlen Specter Center in Philadelphia.

Formerly known as the Finnish Open, this month’s Arctic Open tournament has rebranded in 2023 to make a point of its being the most northerly event in the BWF Tour calendar – it’s held at the Energie Areena in Vantaa, not far from Helsinki. This is also the first time it’s been staged since 2019 for various reasons, and while reigning men’s singles champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand will still be among the favourites, women’s champ Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen has slipped down the world rankings. You can watch the flying shuttlecocks from the round of 16 onwards on TNT Sports.
