From City’s masterclass in the Manchester derby to significant results at the bottom of the table, it was another weekend of Premier League drama that you just couldn’t take your eyes off.

Read on for our round-up of the action…

1. Result of the weekend

Chelsea 0-0 Everton

It’s not often that a goalless draw would be considered the weekend’s most striking result, but hear us out. A determined performance from Everton at Stamford Bridge proved that Marco Silva’s Toffees are starting to take some significant strides in the Premier League and could even mount a serious top-six challenge. The visitors – who have lost just one of their last six league games – put in a hugely resilient defensive display to frustrate Maurizio Sarri’s side.

2. Goal of the weekend

İlkay Gündoğan (Manchester City) v Manchester United

Superb, scintillating, sensational City. Pep Guardiola’s side capped a memorable derby victory over United with a goal that was pure poetry. Consisting of 44 passes, the move involved almost every member of the team before Gündoğan latched on to Bernardo Silva’s cross to slot past David de Gea. When they’re in this sort of mood, there is no stopping the champions.

3. Performance of the weekend

David Silva (Manchester City) v Manchester United

City’s midfield magician was on a different level from everyone else on the pitch during the derby at the Etihad Stadium. Linking play with his usual silky panache, the Spaniard also worked doggedly off the ball, setting the tempo for an intense overall display from the hosts.

4. Manager of the weekend

Rafael Benítez (Newcastle United)

Rafael Benítez (Newcastle United)

From doom and gloom to an air of optimism, Newcastle have turned a corner. Benítez, perhaps the most patient man on Tyneside, steered the Magpies to a second consecutive win as they saw off an in-form Bournemouth 2-1 on home turf. What will be even more pleasing for the Spaniard is that his high-profile summer signing Salomón Rondón is finally starting to get among the goals.

5. Redemption of the weekend

Juan Foyth (Tottenham Hotspur) v Crystal Palace

Giving away not one but two penalties on your Premier League debut is what’s known in the business as having an absolute shocker. But after doing exactly that against Wolves last weekend, 20-year-old Tottenham defender Foyth made amends at Selhurst Park on Saturday by nodding in the winner against Palace while helping to keep a clean sheet. Now that’s how you answer the critics.
