South Africa v India

A heavyweight cricket showdown

A heavyweight howzat!

Will South Africa and India set the world alight in the final match of their Test series

India and South Africa are the best two cricket teams in the world, but who will land the final blow in the last match of their titanic Test series?

South Africa v India, from Wednesday 24 January, 8.25am, Sky Sports Cricket/HD (CH 514/504)

The two most exciting cricket teams on the planet will collide at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium (dubbed “The Bullring” for its intimidating atmosphere and incredibly bouncy pitch) from Wednesday, as South Africa and India square up for the final Test of their heavyweight series.

With India the number one ranked Test team in the world and second-placed South Africa serious rivals for their crown, watching these global titans go to war is the perfect sporting tonic for the January blues.

This final showdown was always going to be a pulsating encounter, with both sets of players determined to inflict early psychological blows ahead of the six one-day internationals and three Twenty20 contests that follow this Test series. And with India arriving on the back of a record nine consecutive Test series wins, and South Africa triumphant in six of their previous seven Test series, both squads are determined to end things in style and reassert their authority.

India’s captain fantastic, Virat Kohli, achieved a stratospheric average of 75 last year, and he’ll be backed up by the likes of the impressive Cheteshwar Pujara when the tourists take to the field. But they will face the terrifying South African pace attack of Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, which many consider to be the most lethal bowling attack in the world. The scrap between South African batsmen Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla and Indian spin kings Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin will also be mesmerising stuff.

And as the player auction for the glitzy, cash-drenched Indian Premier League just happens to be held on January 27 – slap bang in the middle of this Test match – any players hungry for lucrative contracts may be extra eager to dazzle with some crowd-pleasing action. It’s sure to be a memorable encounter that’s a must-watch, not only for cricket aficionados, but for anyone who enjoys elite sporting superstars doing what they do best. Bring it on.
