Riveting crime dramas, hilarious comedies, undercover exposés… we’ve got something for everyone

5 shows you need to watch

Here at Virgin TV Edit we love nothing more than to keep our finger on the pulse of all things telly and wax lyrical about the latest shows that have got us rather excited.

And, boy, have we got a fantastic five for you to get acquainted with right here. Whether it’s the return of an award-winning anthology series, or a boy genius that looks a bit familiar, or a mysterious new drama from the USA – plus an update on a certain gruff London detective – there are some genuine TV gems heading in your direction.

Take a look at our hot picks below…

1. If you adore Ryan Murphy’s anthology series…

Watch The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Wednesdays, 9pm, BBC Two/HD (CH 102/162). Also available in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer. Find episode 1 in Catch Up TV now

Glamour! Murder! Ricky Martin?! If you enjoyed 2016’s The People V. O.J. Simpson or this year’s Feud, you’ll love Ryan Murphy’s latest drama about one of 20th century America’s most notorious crimes. Outrageous fashion designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) became the victim of a serial killer, in a murder that shocked the world. With both style and substance, this will have you hooked from the get-go.

2. If you’re always banging on about The Big Bang Theory

Watch Young Sheldon, Thursdays, 8.30pm, E4/HD (CH 106/145). Also available for 7 days in Catch Up > Channels > All 4

Ever wondered what The Big Bang Theory’s best character was like as a child? Well wonder no more! This hilarious new spin-off series follows wee Sheldon during his formative years in Texas and is narrated by Jim Parsons (who plays the adult Sheldon).

3. If you can’t wait for the Sabrina The Teenage Witch remake…

Watch Riverdale, from Wednesday 7 March, 9pm, 5STAR (CH 151)

Lucy Davis (Shaun Of The Dead) and Miranda Otto (Homeland) as Aunts Hilda and Zelda? We’re already obsessed! While we wait for Sabrina’s comeback, now’s the perfect time to get acquainted with the rest of the Archie Comics universe. The small town of Riverdale is seemingly perfect, but there are many secrets hidden beneath the surface of this curious community. This mystery drama fizzing with murder and milkshakes has become a cult hit since it first arrived on Netflix in 2017.

4. If you can’t get enough of social documentaries…

Watch Ellie Undercover. Find it in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer

Investigative journalist Ellie Flynn seeks to expose a rising trend in landlords offering free accomodation for sex in this two-part documentary. With such arrangements on the rise in Britain, and laws in place to criminalise it, Flynn asks why more isn’t being done to stop this practice. “Even in the most remote parts of the UK, five to ten adverts are going up a week trying to get women and men to stay with them,” Flynn tells Virgin TV Edit. “The demographic of the landlords too [was shocking]. One guy I met was 24. I had a real preconception about who I was going to be meeting. The reality is, it could be anyone.”

5. If, like us, you’re wondering when the biggest TV comeback of 2018 is happening…

Watch Luther, coming later in 2018, BBC One/HD (CH 101/108)

With the recent announcement that Luther is being remade for South Korean audiences, that got us all asking the question: When IS series 5 coming? Well, filming began in early January so you’ll have to make do with “later this year” for now! Writer Neil Cross has described the upcoming installment of the gritty detective drama as the “biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there’s ever been.” If that doesn’t whet your appetite, we haven’t a clue what will.
