No, you haven’t woken up in 1989. Blockbusters returns for a new series on a new channel with a new host...
Blockbusters, Thursday 21 March, 8pm, Comedy Central/HD (CH 132/181). Also available for 7 days in Catch Up > Channels > Comedy Central
During the 1980s and 1990s, Blockbusters was one of the biggest game shows on British telly. It was hosted by the late Bob Holness, and millions of people tuned in to watch contestants answer questions on the famed Blockbusters board in the effort to win prizes that varied from holidays abroad to stereo systems complete with the latest Lisa Stansfield CD.
It was also the only quiz show in television history that featured an audience dancing to its theme tune in eerie synchronicity at the close of each episode. We’re deadly serious!
The show staggered on into the noughties with Liza Tarbuck and Simon Mayo as hosts, before sadly leaving our screens in 2012. But as we’re a nation addicted to nostalgia, it makes perfect sense that Comedy Central has seen fit to revive this iconic quiz show in 2019 with new host Dara Ó Briain!
With his winning blend of wit, warmth and wisdom, the Mock The Week presenter is as perfect a fit for this revival as the interlocking hexagonal pieces on the Blockbusters board.
“I’m delighted to take over this classic quiz show,” says Ó Briain. “However, I will not be laughing at contestants saying, “I’d like a P please Dara”, just as I haven’t laughed at the planet Uranus in ten years of Stargazing Live. See, I can do serious.”
Blockbusters makes its triumphant return to our screens from Thursday 21 March on Comedy Central, but before it gets up and running, refresh your memory of the show with our very own interactive board below. Just click/hover over the letters to find out more…
