Make V-Day a TV day with these box sets and films

This February, fall in love with all the great telly on offer

By Laura Rutkowski, Senior Staff Writer

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or not, everyone can agree that snuggling up with something classy (romantic films) or trashy (reality TV series) is the way to go when the 14th rolls around.

Partner, friend or box of chocolates by your side, we’ve got just the thing to set the mood (amorous or not), including tried-and-tested favourites, romcoms and plenty of dating shows. Get stuck into these sweet telly treats!

The Bodyguard

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

This classic romantic film, featuring sizzling chemistry between Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, truly stands the test of time. Sing it with us now! “I will always love youuuu…”

50 First Dates

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler (always a winning duo) are charming as Henry and Lucy, who fall in love, but face the challenge of Lucy’s short-term memory loss. Henry doesn’t give up, but instead gets creative and just makes sure she falls for him every single day with increasingly romantic gestures.

Eat Pray Love

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

Based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir, this film starring Julia Roberts as Liz proves why loving yourself is the most important thing you can do. Following her divorce, Liz sets out on a journey of self-discovery that takes her to Italy, India and Bali.

Behind The Candelabra

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

Liberace’s big, bold presence certainly needs no dramatisation, but this film imagines the last ten years of the pianist’s life, focusing on his relationship with Scott Thorson. It’s based on Thorson’s memoir, Behind The Candelabra: My Life With Liberace, and features inspired casting with Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Thorson.

Save The Last Dance

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

Sara (Julia Stiles) moves to Chicago after her mother dies in a car accident, prompting her to give up the thing she loves – dance. She reconnects with it when she meets Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), who is passionate about hip-hop, and the pair face the challenges that come with being an interracial couple.

Breakfast At Tiffany’s

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

The love between Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) and her affectionately unnamed cat, Cat, is something worth celebrating alone. Based on Truman Capote’s novel, the story follows socialite Holly, who falls in love with a struggling writer. In 2012, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” We couldn’t agree more!

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets

Before Matthew McConaughey made a name for himself in gritty roles, he really was popping up in most romcoms as the ideal lothario. Here he plays Benjamin, who is challenged by his work colleague to make a woman fall in love with him. Meanwhile, columnist Andie (Kate Hudson) is tasked with writing an article on how to lose a man in ten days. This film is always worth a rewatch.

First Dates

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

The show that has been warming our hearts since 2013 continues to do so, and has even branched out from London’s Paternoster Chop House to Manchester’s The Refinery. Previous couples from the series have gone on to get engaged, married, and there’s even been a First Dates baby! Maître d’hôtel Fred Sirieix and bartender and mixologist Merlin Griffiths certainly know how to make you feel the love.

Celebs Go Dating

Find series 7 & 8 in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love? from Monday 7 February

Dating experts Paul C Brunson and Anna Williamson, assisted by junior client coordinator Tom Read Wilson, are on hand to help famous faces find luuuurve as they date members of the public.

The Love Trap

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

In The Love Trap, hosted by Joel Dommett, a group of single women all compete to win the affections of one man, but they’re not all single – some of them are just in it for the cash prize. Each week, the man has to decide who’s genuine, and here’s where the literal trap bit comes in… the one he decides to boot off will be dumped through a trap door! Brutal…

Are You The One?

Find series 6-8 in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

At one point or another, we’ve all asked ourselves whether the person we’re with is the mystical “one,” but what if we could use technology to take the guesswork out of it? A dating algorithm helps more than 20 single men and women match with their perfect partners, but the results are kept a secret. The singletons get to know each other first and if they choose the same person the algorithm has… well, ka-ching, prize money! If they don’t… they have to start all over again.

Catfish

Find series 8 in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

Romance scams thrived during the pandemic, capitalising on people’s loneliness and gullibility, as well as the sheer amount of time spent at home. Yet they still have nothing on Nev and Kamie’s super-sleuthing skills. It’s time to confront the catfish!

Celebrity Ex On The Beach

Find series 2 in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

Nothing ruins a trip to Marbella quite like having your ex show up. This celebrity version of the show intentionally stirs up trouble on what would otherwise be a perfectly lovely holiday.

True Love Or True Lies?

Find series 1 & 2 in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

Danny Dyer (yes, Danny Dyer) delivers the voiceover for this series, while his daughter Dani, who won Love Island, hosts. Couples go head-to-head to see who has the “best” relationship in an attempt to get a cash prize, but only some of them are genuine lovebirds. The rest are merely friends, colleagues or even strangers attempting to fool everyone. You’ll only find out the truth once a couple is eliminated by their fellow contestants.

Love After Lockup

Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Real Love?

In Love After Lockup, one half of the featured couples are in jail. The show follows what happens when they are released and finally able to be with their partners in the outside world. It’s not an easy road from jailbird to lovebird, which naturally makes for some strangely compelling TV.

Ready To Mingle

Find series 1 in Apps & Games > ITV Hub

Comedian Katherine Ryan hosts this dating game show where it’s The Bachelor, but with bad intentions. While one single girl hunts for her Mr Right, 12 male suitors (some single, some taken) attempt to win her over for the chance to win a cash prize. For those who are already loved up, their partners give them helpful hints on how to make it to the finish line (so their boyfriend can spend the money on an engagement ring – duh). Let the love games begin…

Love Island

Find series 1-7 in Apps & Games > ITV Hub

You know the drill by now… islanders are made to “couple up,” and the public (and often the islanders themselves) then vote individuals or couples off the island. With re-couplings happening each week, those unfortunate enough to find themselves alone are told to pack their bags. The winning couple has to decide whether they’re in it for the money or for love, and choose whether to split or claim the £50,000 cash prize.

Love Island USA

Find series 2 & 3 in Apps & Games > ITV Hub

How do our friends across the pond fare when it comes to matters of the heart? All is fair in love and war, so get ready for fireworks and lots of snogging (or should we say, making out).

The Cabins

Find series 1 & 2 in Apps & Games > ITV Hub

Matched couples meet for the first time at their holiday home – a cabin located in picturesque Cumbria. After spending a full day together, and navigating the awkward sleeping arrangements conversation (will one be confined to the pull-out bed or will they both share the bed-bed?), they decide whether to “check-in” for another night or to pack their bags.

Love Bites

Find series 1 in Apps & Games > ITV Hub

Love Bites, presented by Scarlett Moffatt, is a blend of Dinner Date and Ready Steady Cook, where three individuals cook a three-course meal side by side using the same ingredients to wow their date. The singleton then chooses one of them to date based on their culinary skills alone.
