Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a new kind of superhero series
Can a deadbeat janitor save the world? It’s the question you never knew you needed the answer to – until now…
Future Man, Monday 10 September, 10pm, SYFY/HD (CH 135/165). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > SYFY
Are you looking for a generic superhero show with a clean-cut, muscle-bound protagonist who can fly, flip vehicles with a single finger and shoot lasers from his eyes? Or maybe you’re after a dark, brooding saga about the origins of a black-clad billionaire vigilante with a strict moral code? Then this might not be the show for you.
Given that it counts two-man comedy movie factory Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg among its executive producers, and is co-created by Howard Overman (Misfits), it won’t come as any surprise that Future Man doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you love Rogen and Goldberg’s films, like Superbad and Pineapple Express – not to mention comic-book TV show Preacher, which they also exec-produced – then Future Man’s brand of heroic humour should be right up your street.
Josh Futturman (The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson) is a lazy janitor whose only goal in life is to play as much Biotic Wars – a seemingly impossible video game – as he can.
Except, one day, Josh somehow manages to complete the game. All of a sudden its two main characters, Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson) appear from the future and charge him with a mission: to save the world. Hilarity ensues as our hero gets to grips with future technology, his new destiny and being humanity’s only hope. There’s also a lot of risqué gags. A lot.
So yeah, this isn’t your traditional superhero show. Sure, Tiger, Wolf and Josh can travel through time, but their first mission isn’t to defend civilians from an evil dictator or take out an alien hell-bent on destroying Earth. No, their first mission is to rock up at a 1960s frat party to stop a scientist from catching a dubious infection which will somehow lead to the end of the world. We told you it was unconventional…
