It’s been a season bursting with more twists, turns and terror than ever before – and now it’s time for the grand finale. With season 9 of The Walking Dead coming to an explosive conclusion this Monday on FOX, it’s almost time to come out from behind the sofa. Almost.
One of the biggest talking points this season (apart from you-know-what happening to you-know-who) has been the introduction of the villainous Whisperers. Led by the ruthless Alpha (Samantha Morton), they have caused mayhem since they first revealed themselves so memorably in episode 8. “They add an unsettling feel to the show,” says executive producer and former showrunner Greg Nicotero. “They’re soulless, unstoppable killers.” Even in a show famed for its blood-soaked brutality, this lot stand out like a severed thumb.

The Whisperers will have a major (and no doubt macabre) role to play in Monday’s hugely anticipated climax. Can the survivors convince their new adversaries that all the bloodshed has to end? Or will Alpha and her cronies wreak more havoc than we ever thought possible?
Since making her entrance in the opening half of the season, Samantha Morton has been a standout addition to The Walking Dead. The British actress has enjoyed huge success playing mysterious, complex outsiders – perfect for a role like the cold-blooded Alpha.
Was she welcomed into the cast? Is she a horror fan? And did she take much convincing to shave her head for the role? Here, we chat with Morton about her experience on the show.
